I expected it from last week’s snippet, but Yui Ishikawa was absolutely in her voice acting this episode. Honestly, this episode in particular really made me think about the voice acting skill needed to properly play the role of a truly inhuman character. Both Shiori and Miko got scenes this episode where you really are reminded that they aren’t human, and Ai Fairouz was great as well, but again Yui Ishikawa was just perfect.
She really managed to give different personalities to both Shiori’s human form and true Yokai form while still making both feel equally non-human. It’s just different kinds of non-human vibes they each give off. Her human form is a lot more lighthearted and nonchalant when describing how she literally ate discarded children, while in her Yokai form she has a much more serious and straightforward vibe to her thoughts and actions which makes her seem appropriately scary. Just mad props to her seiyuu. She definitely deserves an award for this performance.
I also absolutely loved seeing Child Hinako. Seeing her interact with Shiori with just completely earnest compassion and not an ounce of fear just feels so genuine to children, and after so long experiencing the the current depressed Hinako, seeing her be so happy is equal parts heartwarming and heartbreaking to me.
Lastly, once again the OST for this series is top notch. It straight up felt like I was listening to an orchestra in certain scenes this episode.
I hope this series is a financial success so we can get more dramatic, darker, and otherwise more “out there” yuri manga adapted into anime. Queer characters, just like straight ones, are not limited to only certain kinds of stories after all.
