Hinako was a strange kid to witness Shiori looking like she came straight out of a horror film and react like “Wow, Miss Fishie is so pretty” instead of being terrified of the nightmare fuel lol.

Yeah, I personally found that a bit contrived. Hinako's sense of aesthetics is kaput if she thought that was ''pretty.'' A more realistic approach would've been her being shocked at the strange creature but still approached it with curiosity and poked it with a stick, after realizing it wasn't gonna hurt her, she slowly would've opened up.

To be fair, Hinako's first reaction is curiosity and concern over the strange creature that looks like it's injured. It's only on the second day that Hinako talks about how Shiori is beautiful like the sea. It's still rather odd though. I guess Hinako's beauty standards are very unconventional.

I will say that Shiori's half-transformed state when she's lounging on the rocks in the flashback does look kind of beautiful.

Born to be a monsterfucker. The depression had nothing to do with that lol

No wonder Hinako's reaction to her childhood friend turning out to be a giant fox was basically "I don't see how that changes things between us"
