Interesting that Shiori found another kid unappetizing. I wonder why? I'm still confused about what makes humans seem more or less appetizing to youkai. We can't really trust anything Shiori's told Hinako about the subject. Even little Hinako seemed tasty to Shiori, so aside from sharing blood, I don't know if we have any concrete reasons Shiori wouldn't want to eat that kid.

What's immortal kid doing now? Since she seemed pretty young still when Shiori last saw her decades later, I assume the immortality also keeps you looking young. Being trapped in a kid's body forever must be a special kind of torture.

It's funny that this all started with Hinako feeding Shiori tamagoyaki from her bento. I went back to rewatch the lunch scene from episode 2... I guess now we can guess what was going through Shiori's head when she saw Hinako's bento. Hinako again offered to share her bento with Shiori, though Shiori would be the one trying to feed Hinako the tamagoyaki.

I wonder why?

Remember what she said about her? That she smelled like a rotting, beached whale. That girl had given up on life, which made her unappetizing. Plus the fact that she was all bones so not much to eat there anyway.

Hmm... I guess, but wouldn't all the kids being thrown into the cove be pretty sad and malnourished?

I'm also confused about Shiori not wanting to eat depressed people, but other youkai thinking that they're really tasty.

I think it has to do with the will to survive rather than just sadness. I guess most of the kids thrown into the cove still wanted to live, whereas the unappetizing girl didn't.

This also adds to why the girl was so angry at Shiori for forcing immortality on her.

Shiori: "Well now I don't want to."

While there is a metaphor about Yokai attacks being a for of suicide attempt, at least in the story, Hinako isn't tasty because she is depressed. She was always tasty and got another boost by having her body change due to the mermaid blood being absorbed in a short time.

I'm pretty sure we only get that information about depressed people smelling tasty from Shiori, who was lying to Hinako about why she smelled good. So maybe don't actually trust it too much

Shiori says that Hinako smells like a beached whale and rot. But the way I reason it, there's both good and bad fermentation and even in between there are certain things one person's diet might find appetizing and another disgusting; for ex 1000 year egg (IDK if it's actually fermented or just cured). Maybe to some yokai a beached whale smells good? While Shiori at least tries to pass herself off as a gourmet.

You made me think about what Shiori's equivalent to sterilizing your mason jars and using enough salt (so that only the good bacteria ferment your pickles) would be. Maybe like, overseeing a small town of people, protecting them, and bringing joy to their lives? Which is ironically what Miko is doing.

Love how much additional context that lunch scene now has from episode 2 because of Shiori's backstory. Also for me it makes the post credit scene of Miko teaching Hinako to cook hit even harder, especially when Miko says it's just as good as your mom's.

I don't know if we have any concrete reasons Shiori wouldn't want to eat that kid.

Ayame was the one who said youkai wouldn't want to eat a human who shared their blood.

Oh, I meant before Shiori let the kid eat mermaid flesh, when they just met. Shiori ate all the other kids who were sacrificed to her, but not that one.

we don't know if it's true now but shiori did say that Hinako smelled like a rotting beach whale. I'm guessing that those who want to die smells like that
