Lazy episode review:

  1. Tama backstory: nice, but superficial.

  2. Rudolf and Tama: typical idea of building up

  3. Buffet scene: Oguri’s one trick joke isn’t really funny anymore, if it’s obvious what kind of joke will follow

  4. Trainee talk: like I already assumed in my last critical posts for weeks, Musaka is a legendary trainer, everything Belno did was and is pointless. But of course her research about pointless things never mentioned again was important.

  5. Oguri is healed and is back, she did take a bit longer than son goku to stand up again

  6. Why do they translate arigatou with appreciate the support and then Tama says “no thanks needed for watching a race?” - no critic for the show, translators being stupid again

  7. Tama and Oguri: let’s start with exposition dump, the second one in this episode.

The rest of the scene was fine

  1. Belno scene: some hint for Tamamo’s situation, that’s fine. Belno’s good eye is not a good eye. There are several possible explanations for not eating an apple, more important is the question did she eat anything else?

The most logical conclusion would be nervousness before the press conference with such a big announcement. What illness could stop you eating an apple piece anyway? I think the whole setup is weird to tell the viewer again how good Belno is in her job.

  1. Oguri training: of course alone in the dark. We already learned long ago that this is a bad idea. But it looks so good, since she is alone and in the dark, cinematography!

It seems she didn’t get any hints for how to reach the zone. Of course not, Musaka does not know and know at the same time how to reach it.

I bet it will be during the race, Oguri has some flashback to how much she loves to run or something and bam, it’s there.

But yeah, good trainer not talking with his single trainee.

  1. Dictus: now she got the zone because of hate / brute forcing. That makes sense within the rules. I like the idea of a losing Uma getting the zone that way. Would have been cool to develop her as a rival during the show though, with more hints and parallels instead of showing Umas who are there for one episode.

I still hate the wording from Obey “imperfect zone”. I still have the opinion that a zone is either complete or not. She can’t activate it a second time. Let’s say it’s a translation error. This is important since otherwise you could do weird things with Oguri and her career. Still not sure how obey got her zone.

Also, funny thing to think about it: no human can see the zone but all Umas. So Umas have to tell their trainers which Umas are in a zone during a race.

Also also, Oguri should tell Musaka what Dictus told her and they have to have a talk about her zone. Before the next race starts.

  1. Belno, both scenes together: hints hints hints, but of course we will see the solution during the 20+ minute race. Let’s see if Belno is really helpful this time.

  2. Dictus: not a fan of the rival helps their rival to get better. It’s a shounen standard trope and her it’s at least not about saving the world, but Dictus has to find Oguri in the night to run. It’s weird.

Oguri already got her zone more or less, so the theory she will get it fully in the next race is highly likely. But it seems it’s about winning. Shounen trope would lead her to a dark zone full of hate weaker than one full of love for running. It won’t be important here, more like in season 4 or so.

And that was the episode. It was fine. Not too stupid, not too boring, but nothing special. Character development and foreshadowing is really basic. Nobody can tell me this is better than a 5/10 episode. An AI with a strong focus on foreshadowing could write this episode.
