The actual Tamamo Cross had always been a fairly light eater, but after the Japan Cup his appetite decreased to the point that he refused to eat his feed entirely, and he had to be put on a liquid diet to keep him healthy. There were even concerns that his condition might deteriorate to the point that he'd have to miss the Arima Kinen. Fortunately that wouldn't happen, but that's what all the talk about Tamamo and food this episode is referencing.

As for Dicta Striker, the horse she's based on, Soccer Boy, was notorious for both his explosive sprints and his explosive temper. He showed a lot of promise early in his career, but his poor temperment and tendency to get injured held him back from reaching his full potential and truly being one of the greats of his time like Oguri was quickly becoming. Still, his last spurts were so fast they got their own nickname, "Bullet Shot." So that's why her zone aura manifests as fireworks.

Also, Belno hype! She may not be a good racer, but at the end of the day she's still an Umamusume, and has certain physical abilities that humans can't match. So she brings something to the table that no other trainer in the series can. I always liked Oguri's moment of realization that she's reacting to Tamamo's retirement the same way March reacted to her leaving Kasumatsu.

I'm also impressed that, presumably, she can reasonably imitate Oguri's forward running style enough to get useful data on Oguri running up inclines. I assume it's hard for someone to just switch up their running style, running is such an automatic muscle-memory thing.

Isn't Oguri able to do that only because of her unusually flexible knees? Seems like a nice way to get put on crutches...

That's a good point... RIP Belno's knees. A torn meniscus can lead to early umarthritis.

Belno might not be able to maintain it at speed or power that Oguri can, but she can likely at least use that stance competently enough to get her data and plan without hurting herself.
