All in all it’s the best possible outcome because it seems like the alternative is Tama retiring not even racing in the Arima Kinen, or her getting hurt/sick. And it’s not like there wasn’t crazy foreshadowing. The question is if Tama will end her career on a loss, if Oguri will take her third consecutive loss, or if one of the other girls that they’ve been building up will snatch victory.
I guess we’ve gotten bits of it during racing, but I feel like this is one of the first times we’ve heard Oguri’s actual internal monologue about her career and her choices, proper contemplation. In the past it’s mostly been her talking through stuff out loud with others, or just her processing through flashbacks. Belno is usually our lens into Oguri’s psyche. It’s very impressive how much they’ve developed Oguri without excessive use of monologuing, given some of the proclivities of other mangaka with an action protagonist. Even in the races, it never feels like her thoughts are redundant to the actual action itself. Not to say there’s no tropes used, but everything flows together pretty organically, despite the fact that they’re stretching out a 2 minute race over 5-10 times that duration. Also I liked the more stylized visuals when they’ve been talking about the zone the past couple episodes.
I’m hoping that whatever happens in the race, Oguri and Tama can end things on good terms. Who knows maybe Tama will become Oguri’s biggest cheerleader afterwards.
