I feel my brain atrophying as I watch it, but still: I think if Otoroi's straight-man routine is played hard enough, I might buy in. Like with Raido in Aharen-san or Tadano in Komi-san

I'd say he's leaning more Raido with how he starts off the straight-man but leans into the jokes as it develops.

Raido is one of the best boys in romcoms, so Otori is doing very well to earn comparisons to The Imaginator! That said, I think the comparison is very apt, and not just because of the flight of fancy sequence with her flying, but because he's very proactive about helping our little sucker, despite how popular and intimidating she is. And as he does so he has no qualms about doing things like pretending to be a talking biscuit bird, or bringing all those snacks for her without making any sort of deal out of it.

I can see why some call him bland, but I think once you scrape beneath the surface, he's quite a richly realized romcom male lead, and much better balanced than most.
