I wonder why Monica's father was burned at the stake. Maybe he was a believer of heliocentrism.

Maomao would have licked her lips after that cup of tea.

Monica drinking the bitter poison to avoid confrontation is so relatable to someone with social anxiety.

The man that was beating Monica, who we learned this episode was her uncle, mentioned something about how everything went to Hell after Monica let the wrong thing slip in public.

There is also that PTSD flashback bit when Cyril first confronted the Mean Girl Trio. Monica said that the word of a noble is law, so that if one thinks you are wicked, then that is the truth.

She was also deeply interested in her father's research...

So, I believe what happened is she said something about his research in public, that was misunderstood. When the local lord got involved he sided against Monica's father and had him condemned as a heretic.

So, in Monica's mind, she said the wrong thing in front of the wrong person and got her fathered executed as a result.

As for his research... it sounded like medical. He thought if he could get the numbers right, he could help people by curing all sorts of problems. And, of course, his philosophy that people are made up of numbers that he wishes to decode.

Now imagine a game of "Telephone/Chinese Whispers" where cutting edge medical research repeated by a little girl, overheard by superstitious peasants that have no scientific understanding, and then passed onto a presumably devout lord power tripping on his own authority.

What he was told Monica's father was researching was almost certainly a gross, and very unflattering, misunderstanding... but he had already made up his mind.

And as the ranking noble in the area adjudicating over a commoner... That (misinformed) noble's word might as well have been from God himself.

Commanding the execution of a heretic he had just condemned with only a fraction of the truth.

So is it any small wonder that Monica was deeply traumatized to the point she could barely speak?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that goes down this type of rabbit hole with plot points of the shows I like. I've been parsing what happened to her because she isn't just socially awkward because of something small. Some shows you can just shrug off the "whys" but this one is one of those special ones that really has some "meat" behind it's themes.

No wonder I always come back to anime. There was more "how life works" info in this episode than half the "regular" shows or movies I try to watch.

Kinda cool see a reply like this that halfway in my head already when I came to see what people said about today's show. Lovely episode.

And good show now for me to reference to current nice over all fad to name all problems autism. Yes Monica could have autism too but she's got enough emotional trauma to mimic autism quite well. And if problem is emotional trauma not autism it can be bad to misdiagnose as the trauma can blow up at any time. Especially if repressed trauma. Thus no self diagnosis folk even the experts have trouble with it being Autism or ADHD or trauma or the dozens of other things that share symptoms.
