I wonder why Monica's father was burned at the stake. Maybe he was a believer of heliocentrism.

Maomao would have licked her lips after that cup of tea.

Monica drinking the bitter poison to avoid confrontation is so relatable to someone with social anxiety.

The man that was beating Monica, who we learned this episode was her uncle, mentioned something about how everything went to Hell after Monica let the wrong thing slip in public.

There is also that PTSD flashback bit when Cyril first confronted the Mean Girl Trio. Monica said that the word of a noble is law, so that if one thinks you are wicked, then that is the truth.

She was also deeply interested in her father's research...

So, I believe what happened is she said something about his research in public, that was misunderstood. When the local lord got involved he sided against Monica's father and had him condemned as a heretic.

So, in Monica's mind, she said the wrong thing in front of the wrong person and got her fathered executed as a result.

As for his research... it sounded like medical. He thought if he could get the numbers right, he could help people by curing all sorts of problems. And, of course, his philosophy that people are made up of numbers that he wishes to decode.

Now imagine a game of "Telephone/Chinese Whispers" where cutting edge medical research repeated by a little girl, overheard by superstitious peasants that have no scientific understanding, and then passed onto a presumably devout lord power tripping on his own authority.

What he was told Monica's father was researching was almost certainly a gross, and very unflattering, misunderstanding... but he had already made up his mind.

And as the ranking noble in the area adjudicating over a commoner... That (misinformed) noble's word might as well have been from God himself.

Commanding the execution of a heretic he had just condemned with only a fraction of the truth.

So is it any small wonder that Monica was deeply traumatized to the point she could barely speak?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that goes down this type of rabbit hole with plot points of the shows I like. I've been parsing what happened to her because she isn't just socially awkward because of something small. Some shows you can just shrug off the "whys" but this one is one of those special ones that really has some "meat" behind it's themes.

No wonder I always come back to anime. There was more "how life works" info in this episode than half the "regular" shows or movies I try to watch.

Kinda cool see a reply like this that halfway in my head already when I came to see what people said about today's show. Lovely episode.

And good show now for me to reference to current nice over all fad to name all problems autism. Yes Monica could have autism too but she's got enough emotional trauma to mimic autism quite well. And if problem is emotional trauma not autism it can be bad to misdiagnose as the trauma can blow up at any time. Especially if repressed trauma. Thus no self diagnosis folk even the experts have trouble with it being Autism or ADHD or trauma or the dozens of other things that share symptoms.

Really puts into perspective what happened earlier in the series with Aaron and Selma. Exposing their crimes probably wasn't that big a deal to her until Felix mentioned they could potentially face execution. She probably wouldn't want her actions leading to someone else being killed and the prince might have picked up on that and told her they would get a more lenient punishment.

It more reminds me of how Carol (of Symphogear GX) lost her father. I keep wondering what keeps Monica from going down the same dark path? Just her truma, or is it a matter of time?

11

u/towardselysium Aug 16 '25

Trauma and purpose. Carol was a girl on a mission and not even God was going to stop her from fulfilling her duty. Monica just seems to kinda be trying to survive and somehow just keeps failing upwards.

4

u/JimmyCWL Aug 16 '25

Carol saw fulfilling her duty as finishing her father's research [even if]it meant taking the world apart to analyze it. The deaths of everyone alive was an acceptable collateral to her.

Do you remember what Monica was working on in her hut in the forest? Maths. I think she's trying to finish her father's research too. But she's just getting started, who knows where it will lead her in the future?

NANDO DEMO intensifies

Imagine trying to explain to people how the anime with the opening called “Kaiju” has literally nothing to do with kaiju, especially to Kaiju No. 8 fans…

She drinks coffee (I assume black.) so bitterness in a drink to her mind doesn't mean something is wrong with it.

7

u/ThrowCarp Aug 16 '25

Imagine a modern-day energy drink drinker. They would've drank a whole liter of the poison no problem.

The OP has a shot of a burning book titled Decoding Magical Properties from Genetic Traits, so presumably something related to genetics that pissed a noble off.

43

u/stardebris Aug 15 '25

In many fantasy settings, nobles horde the secrets of magic and pretend to be of a higher genetic pedigree due to their magical abilities. In such a world, science that shows the relationship between genetics and magic potential would be the highest heresy against the noble class.

13

u/Falsus Aug 15 '25

In short, some noble was about to be exposed due to cheating / faking blood relation / other schemes and then went ''nah fuck that research''?

3

u/athrun_1 Aug 16 '25

The system is built that magic/mana is only for nobility. Maybe, Monica's father published a paper that genetics has no business with magic, and magic can be learned via mathematical formulas.

3

u/CursedTanuki https://anilist.co/user/ikanlele Aug 21 '25

I know that setting is pretty common, but was that how it worked in this series? Monica managed to learn about magic at the Minerva Academy as a commoner before, where she developed the chantless casting. She’s only started disguising herself as a noble for this guard mission. It’s her current academy that’s exclusively for nobles.

In the OP you can see the name of one of the texts that is being burned, and it's something about genetics and magical ability (I don't remember the exact name)

So he might be less Copernicus and more Mendel

[Silent Witch! Ep 7 Spoiler] Oh wow, they really did sneak peak that. What her father researched is the lynch pin for the climax of the entire series.

47

u/Coranis Aug 15 '25

I wonder why Monica's father was burned at the stake. Maybe he was a believer of heliocentrism.

Seems like the same reason as [Symphogear GX not much of a spoiler] Carol's father in Symphogear. People were sick and he used his knowledge and skills to save them but because he did something that people didn't understand he was declared a witch and burned at the stake. Only difference is Monica didn't decide that genocide was the answer

16

u/Averath Aug 15 '25

Symphogear! Man, I want to rewatch that series now.

I can't think of another series where a girl destroys a tank by singing. And ripping off the turret and smashing it like it was a baseball bat.

Gotta love Biki.

11

u/JimmyCWL Aug 15 '25

Didn't or hadn't yet is what I wonder.

6

u/RedRocket4000 Aug 15 '25

Looks like they lucky this universe Monica has not decided on Genocide. Better not push her to much though she a broken cutie that you don't want to risk breaking further.

My man was developing magic based genetics and medicine and people saw him as a spawn of a devil and burned him alive.

15

u/Fighterdoken33 Aug 15 '25

I mean, not that long ago people practically exiled a doctor for telling others they should wash their hands before doing surgery.

magic based genetics

That's not what the title of his book suggests. It looks like he was studying the connection between genetics and talent for magic.

I can't help to wonder if Monica wasn't a product of his genetic research, considering how talented she is at magic and the lack of a mother in her backstory.

u/EffectiveImportant51 Aug 15 '25

Her father was a believer in numbers and seemed to be a healer. Being someone that dedicated to numbers it won't be hard to see him run afoul of the central dogma. People still view atheists as devil worshippers or sinners in our secular world.

I wonder why Monica's father was burned at the stake.

That's something I am very interested to find out, as it has pretty important ramifications aside from Monica's social skills.

It does make me wonder if it was the same realm that Monica lives in now? She has a crazy amount of magic power, not sure I'd be willing to put my life on the line to save it on a regular basis.

Maomao would have licked her lips after that cup of tea.

Crossover would be awesome. Probably MaoMao gets into academy as Monica/Isabella can get her established (another relative???). They both try to keep out of trouble but in different ways so there's always tension about that.
