Fun, cute and funny cross cultural teen romance. This makes me wonder how much this will bud into a romance since we see Lily has a huge crush on Renji. It'd be interesting to see if Lily is completely lonely and has no other friends since she doesn't know Japanese. It's not really mentioned if she goes to school, like it's possible she might go to an English language one or her family might be there only temporarily and doesn't go or has a tutor etc.

As for Renji, I think he was completely disinterested in her romantically at first but came to look forward to seeing her around. He was pretty horrified though when Lily asked to be his lover! Since it's translated from Japanese, I don't know if Renji took that to mean romantic partner or sexual lover and his response left that ambiguous as to how he perceived it. The notebook he gave her was a good and cute idea though.

Renji seemed to know at least some English even though he would be difficult to understand, I wonder how he'd compare to the average Japanese person. Lily's accent sounded more like an American with a British twang but very impressive for a Japanese VA to speak English without a notable Japanese accent. I'd imagine an English person even fluent in Japanese would have great difficulty sounding like they were from Osaka or Okinawa :P

One thing I thought was weird was when Renji found out that Valentine's Day was considered a romantic day in England and asking a lady to be your Valentine was tantamount to asking her out. What exactly do Japanese people consider Valentine's to be? It's considered a non romantic holiday?

The voice actor is Sally Amaki, whose first language is English. She grew up in Los Angeles and apparently failed auditions at first due to her limited Japanese.

Romantic holiday, but with different traditions. I'll leave you to look up details, but a big one is that only women give gifts (typically chocolate) to men on the day, while men give gifts a month later on White Day (Mar 14th). There are also smaller chocolates which are given to friends and such.

So somewhere between the fact that men don't typically give gifts on that day with that meaning, the 5 year age difference, and that he was just grabbing for what to say, I'd guess that a romantic meaning didn't come to mind in the moment.
