You can sorta tell that this was meant to be episode 13 of a 2nd cour anime, as we jump right back into the action, no recap, no intro monologue, just straight into where we left off as if episode 12 was like a week ago LMAO.

This episode introduces one of the biggest constant in the series: Grandmas in Dandadan can kick your ass.

Yeah certainly a shame they had to do split cours cause ending a season with the begining of a new arc was just weird. At least it's finally no longer an issue!

Prob the only non-positive remark about the adaptation as everything was 10/10 in how they adapted it so far.

I really like the contrast between how bright the worm is and how dark the environment looks. It really captures the fact that everything is happening underground.

do we know why they split it up? was the animation not finished or something?

Streaming bullshit, episodes are cheaper in bulk, 24 episodes are cheaper than 2 seasons of 12 episodes. So Netflix orders 1 season, 24 episodes, and split it in two. Then marketing gets to advertise the same season twice and drum up engagement. People will resubscribe to watch season 2 and the streaming company gets to get new shows coming out whenever there's a gap in new content

It also allowed them try the new model of releasing the first 3 episodes as a "movie" to get even more engagement/money at little cost. I saw the movie: besides the recap, it was literally just the episodes, you could even see the edits between episodes, and without the intros, tho didn't even do the intro once, which was disappointing.

More and more revenue that you bet isn't seen by the animators who actually work to produce art.

Animators have a salary.

There's a lot of good reasons to criticise working conditions in the anime industry, but suggesting any random studio employee should have their pay dependant on if the show is successful or not (meaning, if the show tanks, no pay) is batshit insane.

Yes and the culture problem that causes the workers to not organize and strike.

Seeing how Black Companies in Japan work it not something that could work in most cultures. If you treat people like garbage in a desperate for workers economy like Japan most places in world everyone quits and goes somewhere else.

Probably that, and also from a marketing POV is more profitable this way.

Some anime’s just do this though where they just continue the episode number in the next season

The episode title is "Like, This Is the Legend of the Giant Snake" for me. Its numbering is "S2 E1". Was it something different for you?

Grandmas in Dandadan can kick your ass.

Especially if your name is Momo Ayase and you're literally stuck with them.

42

u/actionfirst1 Jul 03 '25

Man, that's 3 grandmas who have tried kicking Momo's ass this show and we're barely into season 2. If Genkai shows up it'll be all over for her

11

u/sanon441 Jul 03 '25

Genkai would be right at home in Dandadan lol.

2

u/paulrenzo Jul 07 '25

Genkai would be OP in Dandadan

5

u/sanon441 Jul 07 '25

I mean, Yes, she would solo the whole verse, but she would be right at home personality wise, she even looks younger when using her spirit energy, she was like the Saiko of the 90's lmao. God, Genkai was one of the best mentor figures in anime... I should go reread the manga for the 100th time...

I think you're right, but I'd rather have a vicious cliffhanger like we had than have the pacing ruined by trying to squeeze 13 episodes into 12.

This was obvious from the last episode when it aired and it happens way too many times these days, latest example is Boku no Hero Vigilante.

Nah vigilante ended exactly where it was supposed to. Thats the ending every manga reader was expecting

1

u/RotationalMind Jul 03 '25

Manga or not, it doesn't feel like an ending to a volume/season.

the movie had a 10 minute recap, it was unnecessary but it did made me wanna watch the whole series on the big screen so bad

2

u/merrydoodles Jul 03 '25

Can someone explain what cour means?

5

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jul 03 '25

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cour

In the context of Dandadan, saying it should've been a 2-cour means it should've been the full 24 episodes in a row instead of two separate 1-cour seasons of 12-episodes each.

1

u/merrydoodles Jul 03 '25

Ahh understood, thanks a lot!

You're welcome, always happy to help!

I can't remember why, but for some reason, I stopped watching episode 12 about halfway through, and I noticed that yesterday when I was waiting for episode 13 to drop. This worked out for me really well

2

u/ImpactMiserable9384 Jul 05 '25

Yeah, this works so much better when episode 13 is available right away and you don't have to wait. That cliffhanger from episode 12 was so evil.

1

u/MEVi1 Jul 03 '25

should of watched the movie🤷🏻‍♂️

I have no hope for the new OPM season to be good tbh, season 2 kinda killed my goodwill for the anime despite it still has decent quality just because season 1 sets the bar too high.

1

u/stone_surgeon Jul 05 '25

yeah the end of s1 was quite abrupt
