Remember, if the grandma on screen isn't a badass and/or can't throw hands, then it's not Dandadan

Jennifer! Lopez! Anaconda!

u/Atomic_Tanuki Jul 03 '25

It would be really funny Jennifer Lopez wakes up the next morning and find "Jennifer Lopez Anaconda" to be trending on twitter and she has absolutely no idea why.

Or when she clicks on the hashtag and sees this.

Zero context dandadan is wild lol.

As a manga reader, full context Dandadan is wild. The last few chapters have been complete wtf and it's peak.

I read the manga via kindle when new volumes come out, so a little behind the weekly readers. Vol. 20 that just came out a few days ago was great.

[Dandadan manga] Sakata and Bamora are two of my favorite characters, so hoping we get to see a least a little of them this season! In particular, the Bamora Arc is my favorite arc in the whole manga. That's probably Season 3 so probably like 2 years off (ugh) but i can't wait to see it animated. I've reread that arc a number of times, but when Momo sees Bamora's flashback, especially the goodbye between bamora and her mom. Omg, that scene leaves me with tears streaming down my face every time, even though I've read it like a dozen times at this point.

u just convinced me to read the manga after s2

I can pretty much guarantee you won't regret it. While the anime is great, the Manga has its own charms.

If I had a nickel for every time I saw a Jennifer Lopez reference in a popular shonen anime, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

JJK had one too didn't it? When Itadori was asked the question of his life...

It was easy to miss but this was a subtle reference to the movie Anaconda featuring Jennifer Lopez.

The only thing that could beat a kickass gyaru is the power of Jennifer Lopez.

That scene was a clear visual reference to the Street Fighter franchise too.

In the scene where Kitou Grandma does the Jennifer Lopez Anaconda move, they used a side view of Kitou Granny double-punching Momo and Momo flying off to the side, the cut includees the background where the other Kitou family folks waving their arms up or clapping (15:06 in the episode) is very distinctly like many Street Fighter fighting stages.

The way that they animated Momo busting throught the wall laterally was very reminiscent of fighting games as well.

In the movie, there was an interview with the director, and he mentioned that Kito grandma was actually based on old Hong Kong kung fu movies tropes and stereotypes. Considering that Japanese fighting games are also mostly uses old Kung fu movies as an homage, you can see the similarities.

Think my subconscious caught it because that short part of the scene made me very happy but I couldn't figure out why. Thanks for pointing it out!

also reminds me of "snake style" kungfu hahaha

That is so weirdly specific lmao

1

u/HelicopterMean1070 Jul 04 '25

Subtle?!

Can't be more direct than this bro.

2

u/BigFatHonkers Jul 04 '25

This part made me crack up

235

u/Haha91haha Jul 03 '25

Dandadan, where the Nursing Homes put people in Hospitals. Where the grandmas break your hip.

101

u/Frontier246 Jul 03 '25

Momo Ayase and her terrible luck with granny's trying to clean her clock on frequent basis, including her own grandmother.

58

u/Haha91haha Jul 03 '25

But wait a second, that just means the second one of Momo's kids has a kid, or she gathers enough grey hair, she'll ascend to even more obscene badass power herself.

38

u/JzanderN Jul 03 '25

How else do you think she's supposed to unlock that power she had in the very first episode? Through training? Definitely helps, but she needs to become a grandma if she wants to become a god!

20

u/y0_master Jul 03 '25

Okarun approves where this line of thinking is heading ๐Ÿ˜

117

u/TheMechanic04 Jul 03 '25

The way the kito gran was taken out was soo good when you consider all she's done throughout her life to countless people

110

u/Frontier246 Jul 03 '25

Kito: "Don't worry, the Kito Family has spent 200 years perfecting this pose to appease the Great Serpent Lord! We're totally safe!"

(Proceed to all get eaten by the Great Serpent Lord)

u/Specific_Frame8537 Jul 04 '25

They started dancing in the presence of a creature with seemingly no eyes so likely it sees through vibration, good job Granny. ๐Ÿ˜‚

u/SirJasonCrage Jul 08 '25

Praise the Maker and His Water. Praise be Shai-Hulud!

5

u/No_Extension4005 Jul 05 '25

And with the extermination of the Kito Family, nothing of value was lost.

36

u/Chrono-Helix Jul 03 '25

I thought they might not be dead if theyโ€™re doing the next episode preview

6

u/Solracziad Jul 04 '25

Could just be a flashback. You never know.

5

u/Hot-Log6283 Jul 04 '25

If I learn anything from Dandadan is that gran is never down the first time.

2

u/flashmozzg Jul 03 '25

Doesn't seem like this is the end of them.

117

u/HurricaneHero93 https://myanimelist.net/profile/HurricaneHero93 Jul 03 '25

Dandadan grannies be like "Call an ambulance...but not for me!"

53

u/Frontier246 Jul 03 '25

Momo: "Help! I'm getting beaten up by an old lady! Again!"

51

u/Frontier246 Jul 03 '25

Momo: "Why are all these grandma's in my life so badass!?"

Turbo Granny: "It's just how the world works, bitch."

9

u/PowerOhene https://anime-planet.com/users/usersPowerEd Jul 05 '25

I love how Momo was doubting it at first - then Turbo Granny was like "you literally are related to one of these badass grandma's ,fool"

36

u/Zeph-Shoir https://myanimelist.net/profile/Zephex Jul 03 '25

I love that she was simply that badass, and that they were genuinely insane creeps. I thought we were building up to them being aliens or influenced by spirits, but it seems like these people were just scum.

36

u/Se7en_Sinner https://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner Jul 03 '25

I'm hoping for some grandma on grandma violence.

21

u/Frontier246 Jul 03 '25 edited Jul 03 '25

Now I'm imagining a Granny Brawl between Seiko and Kito Mama and I would literally pay to see this.

15

u/PeaceAlien https://myanimelist.net/profile/PeaceAlien Jul 03 '25

This new granny is a turbo granny in her own right
