I cannot tell if it was intentional or not, but Kanshi’s commentary from the sidelines on the hero play’s story during its rehearsal was a nice throwback to his short-lived YouTuber career with Nico.

I did not expect Otto-man to be a masochist. Don’t believe that to be age-appropriate for the kids, but I suppose that we’ve found out why the series is a hit with specifically the moms.

What Kanshi's doing is what's called a "tsukkomi", which is a part of Japanese Manzai comedy.

It's very similar to how a double-act comedy works in the west where you're presented with an absurd situation by the funny-man (boke) and the straight-man (tsukkomi) gives a retort. With Manzai these exchanges also happen at a rapid-fire pace.

The Ottoman segment is basically a Manzai routine where the director, being the boke, keeps presenting Kan with absurd situations for him to tsukkomi to.

Gintama, arguably the most famous comedy anime, consists almost entirely of Manzai gags. Gintoki and Kagura being the boke and Shinpachi being the tsukkomi. Same thing with Witch Watch author's previous work, Sket Dance. Himeko being the series' resident tsukkomi.

Since we are talking about tsukkomi and Manzai act Imma just throw in D-frag!, anime that has maybe the strongest tsukkomi MC!

Once a tsukkomi/straight-man, always a tsukkomi/straight-man.

Now not only do moms get to experience an attractive and older male lead, but they also get to vicariously live out their fantasies of dominating their husbands!
