Honestly I think it makes sense.

She's been so beaten down by her refugee status and by people judging her or law enforcement accosting her, that the first time she finally feels powerful in life it goes to her head and she goes on a Newtype Power High.

Absolutely, what interests me is that she seems to have controlled a Gundam before, but we didn't know that so far

There is a bit on her character introduction from gundaminfo site. Nyann escaped from her colony by mobile suit before being rescued by passing ship.
