Same people that watch slice of life shows, though the girls are even more pure. It's because it's innocent, cute and funny. Really, go watch any slice of life and notice the similarities.

Machikado Mazoku for example, is very much a magical girl anime (even Shamiko can be classified as a magical girl, despite being a demon), though leaning more towards slice of life and aimed at adults.

Though Precure is a children's show and most regular slice of life instead aim at young adults and adults. But the idea is the same.

But I do not know how much anime you have watched and which type. Because shonen isn't even scraping the surface of degeneracy.

Also the reason is escapism. You think a mentally dead salaryman wants to see yet another depressing and grim shonen world after his 8-5 working day? No. They need something cheerful and happy that gets them away from the stresses of daily life. A lot of slice of life make use of this.

To add to that I usually prefer shows made at children because difference in character writing. In SoLs aimed at adults characters are usually more tropey and archetypical, to appeal to fans of given character archetype. That's why you have tsunderes and such. Kids show are usually free of that kind of fanservice, making characters seem more natural.
