It's not completely harmless, some of them's skin is poisonous. One lizard once fell into one of my relative's milk pan. She was careless and didn't notice until she had already drunk it, and she didn't survive. I know that maybe different kind of lizard, but who knows? Better to get rid of them when you can , just let them out if you can't squash them.

Naah man... household lizards (gecko) of any type do not cause poison at all. No science behind it. Maximum they may cause easily treatable food poisoning if it falls in edibles due to bacteria on its body (but no severe sickness or death), similar as many other insects and small creatures carries.
