What is "film simulation" exactly?

Fujifilm has been developing film stocks for years and so they basically put their colour science into their digital cameras and call it “Film Simulations.”

This is Fujifilm’s official webpage for it.

What’s unique about them is that they aren’t just LUTs or filters and they cannot be recreated in other software like Photoshop on a technical level due to how each film simulation modifies colours and luminance. You can read a technical deep dive here.

But this is all digital photography. If you want to get a film camera that uses film stocks, that’s a whole different category.
