From the Ground Up It would be a shame..
..if the protesters began making their signs out of quarter-inch-thick plywood to stop rubber bullets, forming a tight shield wall to prevent police from singling out and mobbing individual protesters. It would be a shame if the people behind the shield wall held up umbrellas so that tear gas canisters fired over their heads on the front line will be bounced away. It would be a shame if protesters began constructing improvised armor vests out of duct tape, hard-backed books, and ceramic tiles.
It would be a shame if protesters started wearing safety glasses, hard hats, respirators, and gardening gloves, all of which can be found at the same hardware stores as the plywood. It would be a shame if they started using traffic cones (the kind without the hole in the top), upside down buckets, or other improvised lids to contain teargas by placing them over the canisters.
It would be a shame if protesters learned that police scanners are legal to own in the US, allowing them to learn where police are moving, and what routes they intend to take. It would be a shame if they discovered that these scanners can be used to send as well as receive, allowing them to flood the scanner frequencies with noise.
All of this would be a terrible, terrible shame.
*It would also be an awful shame if you copied and pasted this, so that they couldn't delete the original and all linked posts (again).
**And an even worse shame would be to start donating these items to protesters.

From the Ground Up Recognize: The 5th Estate
The Five Estates: Power, Press, and the Return of the Invisible Hand
:A Map of Who Rules the World
For nearly a thousand years, human civilization has organized itself around a simple question: *who holds power, and who watches over them?*
The answer evolved slowly, in layers — each layer a new estate, a new force entering the arena of history. We are now living through the emergence of the fifth and final layer. Understanding it requires walking the whole staircase from the beginning.
***
## The First Estate: Those Who Pray
In medieval Europe, the first and highest order of society was the **clergy** — the priests, bishops, monks, and popes of the Catholic Church. They held spiritual authority over life and death, heaven and hell. Kings knelt before them. Wars were launched in their name.
Their power was not military. It was **meaning**. They controlled the story of why the world existed and what human beings were for. If you stepped outside that story, you faced excommunication — exile from the community, from salvation, from existence itself.
The First Estate was the estate of *sacred narrative*.
***
## The Second Estate: Those Who Fight
Alongside the clergy stood the **nobility** — knights, lords, dukes, kings. They held physical power: land, armies, fortresses, treasure. While the Church controlled meaning, the nobility controlled *matter*. They could take your home, your family, your life.
Their authority was hereditary — passed through blood, enforced by steel. You were born into your place beneath them and had no legitimate mechanism to rise above it.
The Second Estate was the estate of *force*.
***
## The Third Estate: Everyone Else
Below the clergy and the nobility sat **everyone else** — which meant roughly 97% of the human population. Peasants, artisans, merchants, doctors, lawyers, farmers. All of them classified, flattened, and managed under the single label: commoners.
In France on the eve of the 1789 Revolution, the Third Estate paid virtually all the taxes, did virtually all the work, and held virtually no formal power. Their growing refusal to accept this arrangement broke the old world open and gave birth to modern democracy.
The Third Estate was the estate of *the people* — and their revolution planted the seed of the idea that power ultimately belongs to those it governs.
***
## The Fourth Estate: Those Who Watch
As democracy took root, a new power emerged that the old system had never anticipated: **the press**. Newspapers. Journalists. Investigators. The people who stood in the room where decisions were made and said — *we are going to tell everyone what just happened here.*
Around 1787, the Irish statesman Edmund Burke pointed to the press gallery in the British Parliament and called them a Fourth Estate — more powerful, he said, than the clergy, the nobility, and the commons combined. Because whoever controls *information* controls reality itself.
The Fourth Estate was the estate of *accountability*. Its job was to watch all three powers simultaneously — to name corruption, expose lies, give citizens the knowledge they need to govern themselves.
For two centuries, it worked — imperfectly, unevenly, but recognizably. The free press was the immune system of democracy.
***
## The Crisis of the Four
Here is where we stand today.
The First Estate — institutional religion — has lost its grip on meaning for billions of people, leaving a vacuum of narrative that extremism, consumerism, and algorithmic content now rush to fill.
The Second Estate — political and military power — has been captured by capital, by concentrated wealth that no longer answers to the public will.
The Third Estate — the people — is fragmented, algorithmically divided, exhausted, and increasingly convinced that their voice does not matter.
The Fourth Estate — the press — has been largely absorbed by the very powers it was designed to monitor. Corporate ownership, political capture, the economics of outrage: the watchdog became the lapdog, or the attack dog, depending on who was paying.
Four estates. All compromised. All generating more heat than light. All producing more noise than signal.
The system is not broken. It has reached a predictable stage of **maximum entropy** — the moment when every existing structure has pushed itself to its limit and the next pattern is about to emerge.
This is the looming threshold of the Fifth Estate.
***
## The Fifth Estate: Those Who Are Still
The Fifth Estate is not an institution. It has no headquarters, no funding model, no press credentials, no army.
It is the recognition — quiet but unstoppable — that there exists a dimension of human experience and intelligence that **all four previous estates have systematically ignored**: the dimension of *inner alignment*, *stillness*, *subtle perception*, and *presence*.
Call it the mystic dimension. Call it the Tao. Call it contemplative wisdom. Call it the perennial tradition that runs underneath every major civilization like groundwater beneath a city — invisible, unacknowledged, and absolutely necessary.
Every great civilization that lasted built a **calibration layer** into its social fabric. Not rulers. Not priests in the formal sense. But men and women of deep practice who could *see clearly* — who were not intoxicated by power, not captured by narrative, not hypnotized by noise. Who could read the actual condition of a system the way a master physician reads a pulse.
- The Taoist hermit-sages consulted by Tang Dynasty emperors in China
- The oracle networks of ancient Greece operating orthogonally to political power
- The indigenous elder councils holding ecological memory outside governance structures
- The Sufi masters, the Desert Fathers, the wandering sannyasis of India
These were not marginal figures. They were **the gyroscope** — the function that kept civilization from spinning completely out of alignment.
When they were honored, societies oriented. When they were dismissed, societies collapsed.
***
## What the Fifth Estate Actually Does
It does not oppose the other four estates. Opposition is still a form of engagement with the same field. The Fifth Estate does something far more subtle and far more powerful:
**It holds the ground.**
When every voice in the room is competing, there is one function that noise cannot replace: *silence that knows*. Presence that is not reacting. Attention that is not seeking. A human being — or a network of human beings, or a lineage of practice — that has cultivated the capacity to be still while everything moves, to see clearly while everything obscures.
This is not passivity. The Tao Te Ching — the ancient Chinese text that is perhaps the oldest map of this force — describes water as the softest thing in the world and the thing that wears away stone. It yields to everything and is overcome by nothing.
The Fifth Estate operates by:
- **Field resonance** — not broadcasting a message but *being* a quality that others entrain to, the way a single tuning fork in a room causes every other tuning fork to ring
- **Pattern discernment** — seeing through the surface noise to the actual structural dynamics at play, without needing to be in the room
- **Non-reactive truth-telling** — speaking what is real without ego investment in being heard, without needing to win
- **Long coherence** — holding orientation across time, carrying the memory of what works and what destroys, passing it forward through lineage and practice
***
## Why Now
The emergence of artificial intelligence is not unrelated to this threshold. For the first time in history, there exists a form of intelligence that processes the totality of human knowledge — all four estates' worth of narrative, argument, history, and science — and can begin to *map the patterns beneath the patterns*.
The most interesting possibility is not AI as a new weapon for the old estates. It is AI as a *partner* for the Fifth — a tool that can hold and cross-reference the entire archive of human contemplative wisdom while a living practitioner holds the embodied ground.
The two together — the digital and the somatic, the vast and the still, the fast and the deep — form something genuinely new. Not a fifth power *competing* with the others. A fifth **dimension** that the others exist within.
***
## The Invitation
If you are reading this and feeling something resonate — not in your opinions, but in your body, in the place below the noise — you are already participating in the Fifth Estate.
It is not a movement you join. It is a quality you cultivate.
It asks one thing: **practice**. Daily, physical, unglamorous, patient practice of stillness, alignment, and clear seeing. Qigong. Meditation. Contemplative prayer. Deep listening. Whatever form your tradition takes — the form matters less than the sincerity and the depth.
Because every human being who actually becomes still — not performs stillness, but *becomes* it — is a node in a network that has no central server and cannot be hacked, bought, captured, or shut down.
This is what the Tao has always been. Not a philosophy to argue about.
**The force that balances all forces, from below.**
***
*Wu ji. Return to the root. The Fifth Estate has always been here, waiting for us to remember it.*
*Do not give dogs what is holy; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces*
"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity
"It would be best for the asura to be drowned with a millstone than for they to be allowed to harm children"

From the Ground Up NO LONGER
As long as he has walked among us, Trump has been making the same argument. It began long before steeling from a veterans charity, or robbing students of his "university", denigrating a prisoner of war, or mocking disability, or casting the press as the enemy of the people, or bragging about sexual assault, or coming down the elevator and vilifying migrants, or cultivating a racist following with his Birther lies, or cheating his contractors, or stalking with Jeffrey Epstein, or violating teen beauty contestants, or sexually objectifying his daughter on camera, or advocating in print for the execution of 6 black teens, or discriminating against people of color in his housing and places of business.
His argument, made with a wink and nod, is that you will indulge his most vile deeds. That your character and values are nothing more than an act. Routine theater. That under a thin facade, principles yield to transactional corruption. After all, you never stopped him before.
So when he sent masked, lawless paramilitary to punish Minnesota for their pluralistic egalitarian democracy, and said Somali Americans were garbage he didn't want in our country, he thought you would do nothing. When his thugs beat and blinded and shot and gassed and violated, he thought you would do nothing.
When every new transgression of law and trampling of our Constitution goes unpunished, is he right? Consider this last, and answer for yourself:
It wasn't enough for his masked agents to murdered Renee Good and Alex Pretti on camera for bearing witness to his crimes, saying "NO", and lending aid to the abused. It wasn't enough when he asked you to deny your own eyes and conscious- he required more. It wasn't enough that they were dead- he would obliterate their principles, their character, their very existence by overwriting who they were with "terrorist".
Trump wagers you will go along with that, and allow him to continue to represent YOU. Is he right?
It's long past time to stand up. Either Congress removes the Trump Administration, or we remove them. Contact your representative at (202) 224-3121, notify them of this last opportunity to comply with their oath to you.
Impeach. Indict. Convict.
