That is unfortunate.

There are 2 types of episodes in The Orville:

  • "How did the Moclans achieve FTL if their answer to everything they don't immediately understand or agree with is to kill it or arrest it?"

  • Everything else

u/Admirable-Ad-5026 4d ago

What if they stabbed a rocket or some quantum physics bullshit and discovered on to travel in space using violent theories about ftl travel

27

u/sorrrrbet 3d ago

A Moclan captain got married to his ship, and then when the ship never spoke to him (because it’s an inanimate object) he stabbed divorced it in the Quantum Core.

Anyway, that accidentally caused the quantum drive to exist.

well, we might be able to look at star trek for this. Similar questions can be asked about Klingons. it turns out that they didn't develop warp travel on their own, but rather were conquered and enslaved by a technologically superior species, and the klingons eventually had an uprising and overthrew their enslavers, and then became the enslavers themselves.

Maybe something like that happened in the Moclan past where they leapfrogged into interstellar capability by being on the receiving end of conquest, overcame the conquerers and developed this hardline weapons fetish as a collective trauma response to it (ie. we can't get conquered again if we have big enough guns)

8

u/Sportsguy1701 3d ago

I literally was about to mention the Klingons when I looked at your post. Couldn’t agree more. How the hell did they ever achieve space flight when all they do is fight over honor.

6

u/raven00x 3d ago

also explains why klingons as a culture feel so immature. They never got the opportunity to grow up, as it were.

5

u/Kichigai 3d ago

Just to piggyback on this: the Ferengi bought warp tech, they never invented it on their own.

13

u/memerminecraft If you wish, I will vaporize them 3d ago

isn't there a whole episode about the Moclan Alan Turing

5

u/-Aquatically- Y'all can suck ass, and I'm a spaceman! 3d ago

They simply do not piss; this is how they achieved it - they didn’t need to stop for bathroom breaks.

3

u/Nightshade6432 2d ago

It’d be funny if they brute forced their space travel the same way the eridians in project hail mary brute forced their space program — except where the eridians didn’t know what relativity and radiation were, the moclans altogether didn’t know what was beyond their sky

2

u/ShittyDriver902 2d ago

Someone else needed some FTL killing and arresting done, and then once they gave FTL to the moclans, they got killed or arrested probably

"Sir, the deflectors are down!"

"Bortus? Aren't you supposed to be with Klyden?"

"Sir, at this speed, with no deflectors, it's the Orville that's about to be Klyden with something"

18

u/Saladsoon 4d ago

Ok that got me

3

u/Affectionate-Boat102 3d ago

Klyden/Jar Jar Binks collab

88

u/CeilingHamster 4d ago

I like to imagine this plays out in Admiral Halseys office:

Aide: Sir, there's a message from Captain Mercer

Halsey: WHAT BULLSHIT HAS HE FOUND THIS TIME!

45

u/sans-delilah 4d ago

I swear to god, if he’s on Moclus again…

41

u/CeilingHamster 4d ago

He had a WHAT with the Krill president?

13

u/Indolent_Bard 3d ago

I need this to be cannon.

3

u/Inferex 3d ago

Doesnt be know already? He didn't even have that much of a reaction, just said that he leaves her fate up to Ed

6

u/CeilingHamster 3d ago

That's what he said, politely to the guy. In private, he must get sick of that one ships shenanigans.

6

u/Kichigai 3d ago

Makes me think of this Tumblr thread about alien races having to deal with humans. Especially when you get down to the section about orientation for Vulcans at human schools.

4

u/Useful-Outcome561 2d ago

I WAS WONDERING WHEN SOMEONE WAS GONNA MENTION THIS POST

2

u/Sk8rToon We need no longer fear the banana 1d ago

The best post thread ever.

Oh no, its spreading

12

u/copenhagen_bram An ideal opportunity to study human behavior 4d ago

Remind me to make a Farscape one next

31

u/AnjoH0 4d ago

Almost finished with season 2. Why is Klyden the most horrible person to exist in fiction?

18

u/copenhagen_bram An ideal opportunity to study human behavior 4d ago

I don't know, but how would you like a Klyden/Umbridge/Kai Winn slash crossover?

12

u/lildobe 4d ago

Not a slash crossover. A slasher crossover.

But battle royale style, on Empok Nor.

14

u/Footziees 4d ago

With Klyden going through the EXACT same thing as his own daughter, i really hated his black/white view on the only boys club of the Moclans. Thankfully he eventually came to his senses by the end of season 3, but still, WTF dude.

14

u/AxelNotRose 3d ago

Honestly though, it's not all that uncommon. He was brainwashed and indoctrinated, and then he saw how non-conformists were treated and wanted to protect his kid the only way he knew how. It worked for him because he suppressed everything, with the help of the indoctrination, so why wouldn't it work for his kid? Also, he hates himself and doesn't want to face it. If his kid were to remain female, it would literally force him to face his own past which, he believes, would utterly destroy his own psyche.

As an outsider, with our own cultural values, he comes across as an evil, hateful, hypocritical, piece of trash. But, psychologically, his views and his stance are not all that uncommon (unfortunately) for humans. Hence, the plot.

5

u/Footziees 3d ago

He never stroke me as that kind of person until the plot needed him to be like that but maybe you’re right

3

u/Kichigai 2d ago

Thankfully he eventually came to his senses by the end of season 3, but still, WTF dude.

Never heard of a "self-hating gay" before? It's not even a thing about homophobia or even being a bigot. It's about internalizing fears based on the society around you.

So, for example, I was a self-hating bisexual. I was, personally, super supportive of queer rights. I was openly supportive of same-sex marriage, same-sex adoption, anti-discrimination laws, I had friends who were out, I had family that weren't, but came out to me. I went to Pride events, sometimes with friends, sometimes by myself.

It was A-OK to be gay, lesbian, bi, whatever. Except for me. I wasn't bisexual, oh certainly no. I'm straight as they come. I'm just... curious what it's like to be with another man. Yeah, that's it. I'm definitely not bisexual, I just don't like not-knowing things.

This was the early 2000s, the Bush administration. People were not exactly accepting. There was DOMA, Don't Ask Don't Tell, lifetime ban on blood donation, states were advancing their own same-sex marriage bans to respond to states allowing same-sex marriage, people were still getting beaten for being queer, harassed, kids used homophobic slurs as casually as they shout 6-7 today.

Accepting that I was bisexual would mean accepting that I was part of a largely disliked minority, and could be subjected to all of that hatred and bigotry. Nope, I'm straight. Straighty straight straight. Any part of me that might not be straight, we're shutting that right down, yup.

Klyden really wanted to fit into Moclan society, to not stand out as an object of hatred and ridicule, subjected to abuse by his own government. So he told himself the lie that it was all OK, until he started to believe it. He even went above and beyond, so that nobody would even think about questioning him. He was trying to hide in plain sight, and even though he felt he needed to hurt Topa to fit in, he probably felt Topa would feel those same pressures to conform and would understand, and do the same thing.

No show has ever hit so close to home for me regarding the specific scene you're talking about. I had to cry for a good 10 minutes after watching it

4

u/kiba87637 4d ago

Klyden was trauma maxxing while giving the death stare

Could you imagine if the first episode of the new season was Moclan bullshit

10

I am feeling no discomfort…

2

u/DragonRoar87 2d ago

did they make an orville template too or did you make this from scratch?

1

u/copenhagen_bram An ideal opportunity to study human behavior 2d ago

From scratch

1

u/Neo_Techni 2d ago

Just like the Klingons, these episodes wore out their welcome quickly

1

u/SlyFan2 1d ago

Honestly that happened so often Ed eventually called it out

0

u/KillerSwiller 3d ago

Ah, I love to see a good meme thrive. ^^

-12

u/SloppyMeathole 4d ago

That's honestly what killed the show for me. It was okay at first but then it was like Jesus Christ move on to something else. Although the smoking episode was funny.

20

u/Daeyele 4d ago

What do you mean? The extreme differences between cultures is what lead their defection to the krill and the union allying with the Kaylon, which is insane when you think about it

13

u/OhItsJustJosh 4d ago

That domino meme with "Topa being born" and "Full blown intergalactic war"

3

u/DrHemmington 3d ago

I ... I need to see that meme ...
