Hey everyone! I’m u/Silly-Confection-521, one of the founding mods of r/TheLapa 🌻

This is our little digital lapa, a chill hangout spot for all South Africans (and visitors too 🇿🇦). Whether you’re from the busy streets of Joburg, the quiet suburbs of Bloem, the wild coastlines of the Cape, or chilling somewhere in Limpopo, this is your space to share, laugh, rant, and connect.

🪶 What To Post

Literally anything that adds to the vibe - think:

Funny local moments or memes

Everyday life, stories, rants, or wins

Questions about slang, culture, or South African quirks

Discussions about current events (without the toxic politics, please)

Advice, motivation, food pics, or pet chaos 🐶🐱 Basically… if you’d say it around a braai, it probably belongs here.

🌈 The Vibe

We’re building something friendly, honest, and inclusive. You don’t have to pretend here, just be respectful and keep it real. Debates are cool, bullying isn’t.

🔑 How to Get Started

  1. Introduce yourself in the comments below, tell us where you’re from or your favourite Mzansi thing.

  2. Make your first post! Even a “hey, what’s up?” works.

  3. Invite your friends. The more the merrier!

  4. If you’d like to help mod, hit me up.

Thanks for being part of the first wave of r/TheLapa. Let’s make this corner of the internet a place where everyone, locals, expats, and curious foreigners, feels welcome to pull up a chair and stay a while 🪵🔥

News South Africa Cancels VAT Hike — What Does This Mean for Us?

So earlier today, the Finance Ministry scrapped the planned VAT increase that was meant to kick in on May 1st. The idea was to raise VAT from the current 15% to 15.5% in 2025, and then to 16% in 2026. But after major pushback from political partners (especially the DA) and civil society, they dropped it.

Why it matters: This move avoids putting more pressure on South Africans who are already struggling with the cost of living. But it also leaves a R75 billion hole in the national budget over the next few years — so… where is that money going to come from now?

Side note for the people who don't know: VAT = Value Added Tax. It’s that sneaky extra cost added to most things you buy, like food, clothes, tech, etc. When VAT goes up, everything gets a little more expensive.

Let’s talk: Do you think this was the right move? Should they have gone ahead with the increase to support public services, or is the cost of living already too high? And how do you think they’ll cover the budget gap?
