Firefly’s?

Where are all the firefly’s? I feel used to see them all the time back in the day, but now I never see them. Where did they go?

apparently they need undisturbed (unmowed or sprayed) areas all the way until now

most people mow or spray everything, cause humans are humans

i participate in no mow march, and my neighbors hate me for it

I have fireflies in my yard, but I also let it grow wild, so that makes sense.

i actually just fired my regular lawn guys because they were literally cutting the grass down to the dirt. i hired this hippy yard lady that my neighbor swears by and after she looked at the yard she said we're not cutting anything for at least a month or two. luckily my neighbors are pretty chill and no one bothers anyone about well anything.

unfortunately with people constantly spraying pesticides and being really particular about their yards fireflies don't have anywhere to breed. hell ... even the light pollution messes them up 😞

This sadly 😔 and a lot of people usually rake up all the dried leaf debris in their yards which is where female Fireflies lay their eggs.

I honestly hate how it's seen as socially unacceptable to just...let our yards be safe havens for insects and other often beneficial creatures.

there's a few spots in my yard where i try to leave some leaf debris. we just put out some bird feeders recently and my kid is always excited to see the cardinals. i'm hoping we get some fireflies in the yard this year (fingers crossed)

Crossing my fingers for you too 🤞 Thank you for being kind towards our smaller, often forgotten creatures who share this planet with us 🥹

i found some pill bugs in the backyard the other day and when i tell you i hollered for my hubby to come see 😃 i genuinely hate the trend of over manicured lawns. also i don't mind the squirrels and don't get the hatred of them eating from bird-feeders. my biggest concern is poison ivy and those awful grass stickers!

I still see fireflies suprisingly. There are far and few in my neck of the woods because it’s so foresty, but it’s always nice seeing them

I have surprisingly seen a lot more in Killearn Lakes this year than the last few years

We live basically in the national forest and we get them pretty strong for a month or two. Still not as much as I remember or want. I've noticed they hang out in wilder areas. They are never near the parts of the yard we keep clear.

Fire ants will attack and eat firefly larvae, so if you can knock out any fire ant hills in your yard, you'll be doing a favor for the fireflies. Also, like everyone else said, leaving leaf litter and yard debris in your yard over fall/winter gives them a place to lay their eggs and let the next generation begin.

I use advion ant granules to control fire ants in my yard. I prefer to use organic methods in my garden and the only reasons I use advion are because I can apply it as a spot treatment around ant hills so it never actually gets on any fruits or veggies and I have found it to be way more effective than anything you'll find at Lowes or HD. You can buy it on amazon or at Site One on Cap Cir NE. It is a professional pest control product, so if you use it, make sure you read the entire label and follow the application instructions.

I get a few rounds of fireflies in my backyard every year, some years more than others, doing it this way. You gotta give them a little help, but I think it's worth the effort.

I see them all the time in midtown. Not this early in the year but I see them starting around this time.

I agree that seeing them the past years has been difficult. However, I had one land on my deck table last night, so there's hope! We're still waiting to see the flashes though.

I've only ever seen them in more wooded areas.

I have them every night in my backyard. Back of the property I leave natural, maybe mow it once a year. Up close to the house I keep looking decent.

fireflies are taking a big hit due to climate change, same reason we dont get very many love bugs anymore.

I have some in my back yard. It backs up to a swamp, (which is dry right now) and most of it is natural grass and shrubs which helps.

While I agree there are fewer fireflies I also bring up that I see fewer of them than when I was a kid…. Because I’m looking for them way less, I’m not spending nearly as much time outdoors during those hours as I used to as a kid.
