1 day Pamir Highway drive - worth it?

I’m going to Tajikistan for 4 days. 1 day is for driving on Pamir highway from Dushanbe (shared taxi for 44 USD one way) and drop off at Roshtqala, where I’ll be staying for 2 days with a Tajik friend who would host me. And then 1 day of driving back to Dushanbe (another 44 USD). Would you say it’s worth it? Or should I do the Pamir highway trip properly in the future, because I see most travelers spend at least a week on the highway. Would just a 7 hour drive like mine show the highlights, even though it doesn’t even go the full length from Osh to Murghab? I’ll only cross Kalaikhum and Khorog on the highway and then Roshtqala. Instead would it be better to spend time in the Fann mountains? I’m not physically great to do trekking or hard hikes though, and I have limited budget. Also I’ve just been to Kyrgyzstan Song kul Jeti Oguz Issyk Kul and Kazakhstan around Almaty (lakes mountains), would the Fann mountains be a significant add on or just the same scenes? Thanks!

Social media in Tajikistan

I want to know more about Tajikistan by having conversation with Tajik people but I haven't found that much spaces on the internet. For example I haven't found any Discord servers related to Tajikistan. So I was curious to know what apps Tajik people use as social networks?

Trekking in upper Zeravshan range

Hi - we are coming to Tajikistan to hike in late June. Doing a multi day in the Fann mountains. And have seen photos of upper zeravshan that look amazing.
Does anyone have any experience or advice hiking there? We are not mountaineers but keen trekkers.
Thanks so much!

Join my trek in Fann Mountains June 11-14

Hey everyone!

I’m a 40 year old solo traveler from Norway looking for a few people to join a small group trek in the Fann Mountains in Tajikistan around June 11 (flexible by about a day).

The plan is a 4-day trek with pickup in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) and drop-off in Dushanbe (Tajikistan), crossing some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in Central Asia — alpine lakes, snowy peaks, mountain passes, juniper forests, and remote campsites.

Current route plan:
🏔 Chukurak Lake (~2450m, 1st camp)
🏔 Kulikalon Lakes & Bibidzhanat Lake (~2800m, 2nd camp)
⛰ Alaudin Pass (~3860m, highest point)
🏕 Alaudin Lake (~2780m, final camp)

The trek is considered moderate:
* around 20–25 km total hiking
* 3 nights camping
* usually 4–7 hours hiking per day
* non-technical, no climbing experience needed

It also seems like a really good acclimatization trek before continuing on the Pamir Highway or other higher-altitude travel in Tajikistan/Kyrgyzstan.

The tour I’m looking at includes:
✅ Pickup in Samarkand & drop-off in Dushanbe
✅ Local mountain guide and chef
✅ All meals during the trek
✅ Tents & camping equipment
✅ Donkeys/porters carrying the heavy gear
✅ Transfers in Tajikistan

Price depends on group size since transport/support costs are shared:
* 2 people: ~€1050 pp
* 4 people: ~€760 pp
* 5 people: ~€700 pp

About me: I’m not a hardcore trekker 😄 I’ve done the Inca Trail and some other mountain hikes, but mostly I just enjoy scenic trekking and adventure travel. This route seems challenging enough to feel rewarding without being overly extreme.

If anyone is traveling through Central Asia around that time and might want to join, send me a message or comment.

How long for evisa?

Salaam. I applied for Tajikistan evisa 2 weeks ago and have not received it by email yet. How long does it usually take? I tried calling the embassy and they never answer or answer emails.

Applied for multi entry and because I'm staying longer than 30 days and will be entering and exiting through Uzbekistan.

Where to find co travelers for the Pamir highway?

Hi! We are planning to do a 9-day trip on the Pamir highway, around 1 September, with driver, starting in Dushanbe (and including Wakhan). We would like to share a car or vehicle with 2-4 people. Where did you guys find other travelers? All communities, fora, WhatsApp groups etc seem to be a bit dead. Any recommendations for groups or organisations? Or hostels? Though we need to book the trip at forehand.

Сафар Late September Vs November

Hi all,

I'm figuring out the best time to visit Tajikistan. My plan is to fly into Uzbekistan, visit the Uzbek part of the Fergana Valley and then continue into Tajikistan, flying out of Dushanbe. One option is 18-30 September but I'm a bit torn as I have an event with friends I'd have to decline attending. The other option is November (probably the first half). Is November really that bad as opposed to September? I want to get a general feeling of the country, perhaps do some light duty hiking. I'll appreciate your input.

Touristic Recommendations

Greetings,

I’m visiting Dushanbe in June for the first time and need your advice/thought about the city and the people.
What’s the city like, what should i visit, are there any scammers and how to avoid being scammed, is it safe to walk in the streets, are there many English speakers, are there any specific rules and what recommendations do you have?
I would appreciate your advice.
Thank you

Tajikistan mini-tour

Hello! We are a couple and we'll visit Uzbekistan on June. We would also do a tour to Tajikistan, we only have 2 days and 1 night, so my idea is to depart from the border near Panjakent, visit the 7 lakes in the morning, than in the afternoon drive to Istaravsan and drop us in Khujand to sleep there, so we wouldn’t have to keep the driver busy the next day and could save a little money. We can figure out how to get to Oybek border on our own. We don't need luxury cars, just a driver and some good time there : ) Thank you

Tajik and Iranian friendship

Do you think something like that is possible? Both people share many similarities. Language, Newroz, same poets etc

And most Tajiks like Iranians are starting to hate Islam and curse it. With Emomali Rahmon and Ahmad Massouds son Tajiks have secular and irreligious leaders. Do you think Iranians and Tajiks can get along?

7 days in Tajikistan

Hey guys, I'm making a spontaneous trip to Tajikistan in a few days. Will be there for 7 days and so far this is what I came up with. I will be taking marshrutka or shared taxi for the whole trip. I'm trying to save as much as I can so won't be doing any private/guided tours.

Day 1: arrive in Dushanbe in the morning, explore in the afternoon

Day 2: Dushanbe to Iskanderkul

Day 3: Iskanderkul to Panjakent

Day 4: Seven Lakes (trekking+camping?)

Day 5: 7th lake/Panjakent to Khujand

Day 6: Khujand to Dushanbe

Day 7: Hisar Fortress, head for airport at midnight

What do you guys think? I would like to do a one-day trek in the Seven Lakes if possible (day4). I've read that you can set camp on the 7th lake, but just haven't figured out where to start the trek from, and how will I get back to civilization on day5 (heading to Khujand).

Also, can I just arrive at Iskanderkul/Sary-tag and book a guesthouse there? Will it be cheaper? Online I can see 25USD.

Thanks for any inputs 🙏

Tajiks and Pashtuns religiosity

I have the perception that Pashtuns are much more religious than Tajiks from both Afghanistan and Tajikistan and are more proud about their Sunni Islamic identity while many Tajiks start to embrace Persian nationalism (like many Iranians nowadays) and hate Islam and Arabs.

Pashtuns are more active in Islamic movements like the Taliban and others while Tajiks are more interested in the very secular tajik persian nationalism of Ahmad Massouds movement and Emomali Rahmons anti Islamic policies. What is your opinion?

Stock Investing with IBKR

I am trying to help my cousin, who is in Tajikistan, with setting up an investment account in Interactive Brokers, to trade stocks. It seems the main problem is high commission fees when transferring funds in and out. The Alif Bank charges a flat fee of 700 somoni (about $70) for Swift transfer, which is also done only in-person, plus also requesting a document from the National Bank (he has to send them a form notifying that he has a foreign account, which is IBKR).

Are there any investors in Tajikistan? Are there no easier ways to set this all up for him, so he could put funds and take out easier, with less commissions? Or maybe there is another platform from where he can invest into stocks? We don't want to do regular bank savings account, want a more shariah compliant route.
