Discussion The Fifth Race Spoiler

Post image

The room that they gate into could very well be just a box in space, and I'm wondering if there's anything later to contradict this.

If the only purpose is to hold the Ancient archive then it wouldn't need to be ON a planet, right?

They say much later that they had expeditions there to figure out some stuff about that room, but nothing came of it. What's really annoying that this reminds me of is that they can calculate the position from the gate adress. Why didn't they go and check what's outside the room when they eventually got hyperdrive capable ships?

Maybe they did, but if it was just a sine room building on an empty planet then there would be no reason to bring up such a nothing burger later in the series.

The same can be said for a lot of planets on the Abydos cartouche that wouldn’t dial, especially Heliopolis, but the show intentionally glosses over the more complex parts of interstellar space (and time) travel for the writing to work at all.

Perhaps the writing will lead to something equivalently awesome in the upcoming series.

There are quite a number of planets that I'm surprised that we never re-investigate once we have functional spaceships. We never go to New Tollana to see what happened to thr Tollan, never send people to the planet/ship/place with this room to see if there are more Alteran Ruins to discover, never send linguists to Heliopolis to decipher the language of the Four Great Races, never return to Harlan's planet to learn more about that advanced technology, never try to communicate with the Re'tu or a few other Anti-Goa'uld civilizations which could be peers/allies, revisiting Bedrossia/Optricia, Euronda post-Breeder Victory, the Galarans and the Enkarans, and recovering the naquadah asteroid.

How much of the potentially interesting stuff in SG1 is just overshadowed by them claiming the city of the ancients and the ancient database with Atlantis? That’s only a few years later and only a couple of years after they manage to build hyperdrive capable ships. Why bother with scraps when you can just commit more resources to further exploring and studying Atlantis?
