I still don't understand how clockwise and anti-clockwise is confusing. Is someone able to explain why it's confusing? I thought it was pretty straight forward

u/Christianmonk3y 1d ago
It's universally accepted except that digital watch mean young people need retraining...

u/FocusEnough 1d ago
In LTA's Facebook comments, the argument was more that *seniors* had a hard time understanding, not young people. Which makes it even more confusing

I mean LRTs have analogue clocks but most of them have run out of battery...

If you are in the north and you want to travel east you go clock-wise, but anti-clockwise if you are in the south and want to travel east. If you are in the west and want to travel east you go either clock-wise or anticlockwise.
However if you want to change lines to take a more direct route, you may need to go up or down a few stations which is anti-clockwise if you are in the east, and clockwise for the west.
But you then you have to navigate the MRT signs and directions which after several escalators you always find you are in the wrong train and direction.

Only Paya Lebar, Bayfront and Promenade have this problem for not being fully island (Paya Lebar is but the middle platform stops you from changing at platform level and Bayfront technically is but for a completely different line).

Some people don't know what those terms mean or dont know what direction a clock's hands turn or how to visualise an imaginary clock on a non-clock image

This is peak-levelled visual guidance design. Amazing. Wish metro in my hometown had directed some of the infrastructure expense onto things like these.

They had to explain clockwise means it's in the same direction as the clock's hands omg

Imagine an uproar because PSLE math set a question asking students to interpret an analog clock, and they complain because they had little exposure to analog clocks.

I mean if PSLE math set a question that was not taught that is a problem isn't it.

Some people don't use analog clock already mah.

It should be a basic thing taught in schools bruh 😭 it's abit embarassing if u dont know how to read analog clock.. in school i remember they had questions with analog clock.

u/theonewhoisnotcrazy 1d ago
So true. Regardless of whether we use analog clock or not, clockwise is still a concept. I can't think of another word that means exactly that. It's not just directional, so 'right' and 'forward' don't cut it.

I m probably gonna get slimed but this is honestly quite simple and in-your-face already. It is confusing to some at first but eventually people will get used to it. This ain’t the worse I’ve seen for a circular service ngl (at least they didn’t go with inner and outer loops)
My only issue is that the dot matrix board at the exit points (slide 5) only now shows 1 train per platform arrival status and not the following train anymore, which is a bummer

So confusing especially if you rarely take ccl

what exactly is confusing about clockwise and anticlockwise?

Long words don't look good. Human nature. We prefer simpler things.

Why all these extra rules? Just make whether or not the train loops a separate tag attached to the name, and cut the "via Station X".
3
u/DouDouandFriends 1d ago
Because some people don't know clockwise and it's just easier to know "ah yes! I want to get off at ts interchange"

Tourist: "Excuse me, Auntie, we want to go to HarbourFront. Which side of the platform?"
Auntie (pointing aggressively at the map): "Ai ya, look here! Left side also can, right side also can. If you take the left, you reach in 5 minutes. If you take the right, you go one big round, see the whole island, grow 2 years older, and end up right back here looking at my face again. You choose!"

The PSD signs are north-up/framed geographically on some platforms (e.g. Paya Lebar), which I don’t like. On ACW platform (towards MacPherson and Harbourfront) the map shows clockwise, and need to refer to station board in the middle of platform. Otherwise, pretty spot on!

Why the fade... Very odd design choice! No one will understand that. Keep it simple stupid!
4
u/FocusEnough 1d ago
Would it not be weirder if it were to stop abruptly? Because isn't the fade meant to communicate the train will still continuously move, just that it will take a longer time to get there
3
u/interestingpanzer 1d ago
The reason is that now that it is a circle, let's say you want to get to a station near the opposite end of where you are.
Rather than have you count stations, you can see what is faded and what isn't
A circle isn't see easy to quickly tell how many stations away a disparate station is than a straight line.

How can you question our LTA elites.
3
u/Christianmonk3y 1d ago
We should question so things get better... Feedback is the only way things will improve. But are the ears listening...

They did hold a public consultation exercise months back… Assuming you didn’t partake in it..?
Besides, how else you would express this?
1
u/Christianmonk3y 1d ago
Yes I did partake in the consultation. Firstly I would have the station names in a clockwise direction above the doors.

Looks like a big Q. It’s the Question Line.
