AMA Howdy! I'm Quadnick, a quadriplegic gamer and content creator. I'm all crippled and stuff. AMA!

Hey there r/rocketleague, My name is Nick, but I go by Quadnick on the interwebs. The "Quad" before my "Nick" name stands for "Quadriplegic." In other words, the "Quad" stands for something. It stands for: "I can't stand." I can't stand because I improperly dove off a rope swing at the age of 17 (11 years ago) and hit my head on the river bottom, which completely exploded the C5 vertabre and fractured the C1 vertabre in my neck, causing damage to my spinal cord. Plus, I got to experience the joys of drowning because my friends thought my lifeless, face-down body floating gently along the current was just a prank. After getting fished out of the water, having multiple surgeries, breathing tubes, a tracheotomy, [collapsed] lung treatments, getting a halo bolted into my skull, and going through rehabilitation, I was sent home 3 months later with the final prognosis of being a C5 - incomplete quadriplegic. "Incomplete" meaning I still had some use of my body. Here's a quick rundown: Everything below my sexy nipples got rekt. I can't move there at all and have varying types of sensation, none of which goes above 20% or so. Therefore, all of my movement stems from above them nipples. But it's not all gravy. My tits, triceps, and hands got rekt too. The only muscles I still have full control over are my forearms (kinda), biceps, upper back, shoulders, neck, and face. Let's brighten this post up a bit by talking about what I do with the remaining use of my body.

It didn't take long for me to realize that the finger splints the rehab center taught us to make for my pointer fingers could be used to press the keys on a laptop, or that my left pinky knuckle could operate the touchpad. So with this minimal, but capable control, I started playing whatever games I could on the Toshiba laptop my mom bought me. Then I started going HAM once I suckered her into buying me an Alienware. Flash forward to modern day Quadnick and you'll see a cripple that can play games pretty damn well with this two-finger-laptop setup.

If my name sounds familiar to you, it may be because you've seen me on Twitch or Utoob; but most likely it's because you've seen the video that started both of those channels; the video I did with SunlessKhan called Are You Better than a Quadriplegic. While I have enjoyed editing since I started dicking around with the Rockstar Editor for GTA IV and learning how to use Sony Vegas to put the clips together into funny moments videos for me and my friends, I never had any aspirations of becoming a content creator until Sunless and I both forsaw people coming to my Utoob channel once that video was released. So as a precaution, I changed my name from HellOnWheels to Quadriplegnick (Sunless helped me simplify it to Quadnick) and uploaded a video called Watch a Cripple play Rocket League; and sure enough, people came flooding in. I gained something like 3k subscribers in a week. It was nuts.

Since that point, 2 years ago, I've been giving the content creator thing a go. I didn't really have a plan, but I knew from the start that I didn't want to be a Rocket League-only Utoober, since I play too many other games to make that work, but RL still has a main stake on my channel. I've continued the Are You Better than a Quadriplegic series, where I 1v1 people who sign up in my Discord to find out if they are better than me or not (SPOILER ALERT: 90% of them are). I've also made a Funny Moments video, a video where me and 3 other cripples I've met take on 2 champs, and a whole host of other types of videos, ranging from straight game play to video essays. But as I said, I make videos for all sorts of games, for Dark Souls to Dirt Rally 2, from Let's Plays to random shenanigans. As you can tell, I don't really have a specific direction for my channel. I've just been doing whatever I fancied without concern for the numbers. But as I'm getting older (I'm almost 30 WTF) and in more need of finances, I'm looking to find a consistent direction for my channel that will entertain the audience and bring me enjoyment, creativity in editing, and dare I say, an income.

Side note: I also enjoy working out, hanging out with friends and family, and outdoor activities such as camping, wheeling, and shooting; all of which is made possible by my all terrain Frontier V6 power wheelchair and 2014 Ford Econoline wheelchair conversion van.

So there it is! My life in a nutshell. Ask me anything!

Your attitude is really quite inspiring, what advice would you give to another person in a similar position to yourself?

Also

Have you ever tried out the Xbox Adaptive Controller and would something like that even work for you?

29

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

The advice I'd give to someone in a similar situation would be that life isn't over just because it's different. And your time will be much better spent figuring out what you can still be successful at instead of dwelling on everything you lost. One brings hope and prosperity while the other brings only pain. And I'd probably preach the two mottos/quotes that have helped me the most, and those are: "Adapt and overcome", and "If a problem can be solved there is no use worrying about it. If it can't be solved, worrying will do no good." But then I'd probably make some fart or dick jokes to make the whole conversation feel less pretentious.

As for the Xbox Adaptive Controller, I have not tried it, and there are two reasons I haven't been very motivated to. One is the price. The controller, along with all the extras I would need would cost a pretty penny. And the other is that it wouldn't quite work with my current setup since I don't have a lot of room for it. That being said, I'm always down to try new things, so I would like to test it out one day. It just might take some special circumstances for that to happen.

Did they put you in charge of the servers?

I get why you would think that, but I can assure you that the servers are disabled for some other reason entirely.

What was it like drowning and not being able to do anything about it? I 100% know if something like that happened to my friend group we would think it’s a prank. Makes me rethink how anyone can think that’s funny to prank like that. Also what rank are you in competitive?

That was absolutely terrifying, but at the end of it, it was the greatest feeling I have ever known.

Idk why, but I could not move at all after I hit my head and resurfaced face-down. Maybe my brain was recalibrating. All I knew is that my lungs were on fire and I had to just keep releasing little bits of air so I could last long enough to be rescued. But that rescue took for fucking ever to come. I finally ran out of air to release, and without the temporary soothing that followed the procedure, it didn't take long for the burning to become too much. I had to breath. To breath is to live, but in that current situation..

After I inhaled everything went white. I remember still feeling present. Like I was at some place. I also vaguely remember talking to something. I say "something" because I distinctly remember whatever it was being purple... and hairy... But the strongest memory I have from that experience was the feeling I had during it all. It's honestly hard to explain, but the best way I can describe it is peace. I just felt like everything was perfect. It was the greatest feeling I have ever known, and I say that even after I've been given Dilaudid and Fentanyl as IV painkillers, and have taken ecstasy multiple times. I know how good good can feel, and they had nothing on how I felt during that time. Call it proof of God, or call it my brain flooding my dying body with chemicals, I don't know. All I know is that it made me feel just ever-so-slightly less fearful of death.

It didn't last too long though, because one of the girls finally pulled me from the water. She ended up screaming "EW!" and dropping me back under when I coughed up a lung full of water, but she is still my hero.

So to summarize, I had mixed feelings about it lol.

Oh, and I'm diamond 2 in 3s currently.

what did you want to do career wise before you were paralyzed? (srry if its been asked before)

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

I was very active and good with my hands before I done crippled myself. I spent a lot of time wheeling my '88 Bronco and even more time fixing the damn thing. So I considered going into the mechanic field with the experience I had gained from it all, but hearing my brother bitch about his experiences during the process, I became less and less inclined.

The one big decision I would always go back and forth on was the military. It was a tough one. The hardest part was imagining leaving people behind. The rest of it was right up my alley though, so I would constantly change my mind about it. I was leaning more towards it after I went to a recruitment thing at a park. They were testing people's physical ability and I was approached by pretty much every branch of military by the end of it lol. I was in great shape. It was somewhat sad, but amusing to see the hope drain from their faces when I told them I was only 16 and just came because my brother was doing it. Anyways, if I went through with it, I wanted to either use guns or fly planes.

Now I just do all of the above in video games lol.

Hey, I know I’m super late to all of this but idk, I just wanted to let you know this comment right here was a huge inspiration moment for me. While I’m fortunate to have use of all of my limbs, sometimes I look past that because when I was 15 I took an arrow to the eye and lost almost all vision in my left eye. I now see sort of a donut shape, because I’m missing the very center and all peripheral vision. As a teen I was huge into my own bronco(a 95 Eddie Bauer) and had much the same sorts of plans as you prior to my accident. I’m not sure why i wanted to say this, but part of reading your story here really made me realize im not doing good enough for myself, you’ve accomplished far more than I could ever dream of doing, and I tend to blame my injury for the reason for all of that. No more, so thank you man.

Pineapple on pizza or no?

18

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20 edited Feb 02 '20

You know, I used to be the type that would respond "HELL no" and then proceed to shit on people who might answer yes, but I had no choice but to eat a BBQ chicken pizza from Round Table not too long ago an it totally changed my perspective... to a "maybe." That pizza was damn good, but not all pineapple pizzas are.

Same experience here, regarding the BBQ Chicken pizza thing. It was honestly awesome, and my first thought before biting in was "I'm gonna regret this so hard"

I also like pineapple on pizza, though.

Can we have a quick list of the directions you want/have thought of leading your channel towards to gain more popularity?

7

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

I want to go back to what got me into editing in the first place; making funny moments videos. I'd like to pick up a game when it comes out, play the shit out of it while using OBS's replay buffer to save any funny or cool moments, and then use those clips to make content. Those types of videos would give me a lot more chances to be creative with the editing, which even though I'm not the best editor, I still think that is a strong suit of mine. I know I'd still make different types of videos when the idea hits me, like I do now, but it would be nice for that to be the main material for my channel.

If it went to plan, I'd be doing 50% gaming and 50% editing, compared to the 20%/80% that's burning me out right meow. People really seemed to enjoy the funny moments video I made for Rocket League, so I'm remaining hopeful about it.

To start you sound like a awesome and funny dude. Never heard of you before this but I am definitely subbing.

First question is when do we get to see those sexy nipples? lol

First real question. What is the highest rank you have hit in RL and what mode?

Second question. What is your favorite RL game mode to play?

5

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

To start, no u. But thanks for the sub =)

  1. I posted a shirtless picture on Twitter when I was in the emergency room getting an EKG test done, so they're out there if you look hard enough lol
  2. I am diamond 2 in 3s right now, but I got that rank while playing with my champ+ friends, so I'm more like low to mid d1 on my own.
  3. Unranked 3s is my go to, but I've been wanting to play more competitive. And Rumble is my close second overall.

2

u/waSABIstyle Feb 01 '20

Thanks for the reply! I also do love me some Rumble. GLHF and stay on the up and up man!

3

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

I'll do my best, brother!

3

u/skeefer74 Feb 01 '20

What an inspiration man! Have you ever thought about modeling your channel around info/advice for other disabled gamers?

Also, you said you were into dark souls games, are there any genres/types of games you find yourself having more difficulty with?

3

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

I have thought about it, mainly because my friend Sonja also recommended it. I just don't really know how to get started. I haven't been struck by the aha moment that kick-starts most of my videos. I am definitely open to it when it comes though.

Man, Dark Souls 3 kicked my ass and I haven't played it since lol. I knew I would have a hard time with it though, due to the melee combat, which is something I struggle with. I also have a hard time with platformers. Anything that requires many different buttons, or even just pressing few buttons quickly. I'm also pretty good at first person shooters, but if you put me in a competitive setting, I am absolute dogshit since I can't aim/shot and move at the same time.

All that aside, I can humblebrag by saying that I am surprisingly good at most types of games, despite my disability.

1

u/ZachTheGunner2 Champion I Feb 01 '20

Have you played any tactical shooters that contain slower more long range gameplay and don't focus so much on twitchy reaction times? Games like Squad have a lot of opportunities to just sit in one place with a DMR or LMG and just pick off targets, either supporting an assault on an objective or holding down an objective. Winning those games are a lot more about coordinated teamwork than raw skill.

1

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

Not long after I got into Squad my game started crashing and forced me to quit playing. I haven't tried it since. But I have played games like that and I definitely get a higher kill to death ratio lol.

u/skeefer74 Feb 01 '20

1

Because, Michael, bowing to your greatness would undermine my own. My vanity will not allow it.

But just so you don't leave here empty handed, I will say that out of all the cripples I have met, you are by far the most skilled at Rocket League.

2

u/Marybr02 Feb 01 '20

What is your favorite part of creating content?

2

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

My favorite part is the people I meet. I've had quite a few crips get in touch with me and I love seeing how they overcome their disabilities to keep gaming. The normies too. The amount of online friends I have has skyrocketed. It has helped me realize that not everyone online is an asshole. But seriously, I have met some really awesome people since I started this and I meet more almost every day. It honestly makes getting a bigger channel less desirable, since the big boys always say it's too hard to keep up with all the messages.

2

u/IceKohl Feb 01 '20

I had a back injury that cost me control (not feeling) of an ankle. I can get angry about my body failing. Do you get this and how do you deal with it if you do?

1

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

Wow, that is a new one for me. That sounds like it would be really frustrating! I can't imagine how many times you've rolled your ankle because of that, and that fact that you can still feel it is just insult to injury.

I definitely know where you're coming from. Skipping over the obvious fact that I can't move most of my body, I do get frustrated with the parts I can use. Even though my hands don't work, I'm actually pretty fortunate that they ended up being stuck in a fist position because that means I can still wiggle my fingers around objects in order to manipulate them. Although it's usually just as sketchy as it sounds. I've dropped things at very inopportune moments, or broke things I really didn't want to. Also, since I eat some foods, like a burger or a burrito, by balancing them on the top of my hand, I have lost too many delicious meals to the floor. Or the rare, but somewhat amazing situation of when they fall into the cup of water sitting in between my legs. And finally, without the use of my triceps, I cannot tell you how many times holding my arms above my head has led to getting punched in the face by my own fist; either by my own accident, or when my brother forces me to do it on purpose. And then when you factor in the sometimes violent spasms that occur out of nowhere, all of the above and much more becomes way more likely to happen.

As for how I deal with it; honestly, these days I mostly just laugh. Laughter has been the biggest helper in all this. It's been very freeing to treat it comically. But of course, I don't always laugh. Sometimes I get fucking pissed. But after some serious cussing and complaining, I usually feel better and come out of it with the experience to make it less likely to happen in the future.

I got into RL eSports because of G2, but back when they were called Cosmic Aftershock and primarily because of Gibbs. I was that all-time-goalie looking mf for maaany hours in my early days of RL, so I looked up to him since he was CA's goalie, back when RL eSports had goalies lol. So that team will always be one of my favorites, even as the roster evolves.

My question...

If you were able to change one thing about our RL community... what would you change?

2

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

It's my pleasure! I was really surprised to get the invite.

As for the one thing I would like to change in the Rocket League community, that would easily be the toxicity. It's pretty sad to read the comments in the chat after playing multiple games with a cool Lobby. Everyone is really excited, talking about how fun it was, and more importantly, how rare it is. It makes me wish it could happen more often.

To change that would require changing the entire internet, or the human psyche for that matter. For whatever reason the anonymity of the internet brings out the worst in some people.

One of the girls phased out of my life, as is normal with friends from high school. The other one and I remain good friends, but what you would call Facebook friends since she moved to another state. And my guy friend and I are still close as well, but I only see him when he comes back to town on his breaks from being in the forest service.

The only weird looks I get are from children or animals who don't understand just what the hell I am lol. But with older people it's quite the opposite. Most are very accommodating and helpful.

1

u/Clintano Feb 01 '20

Through all that you have overcome, what was the hardest but most rewarding or relieving challenge that you have encountered so far?

7

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

Man, that is such a good question. I was worried it was going to be too good, and hard to answer, but it just came to me. The hardest but most rewarding and relieving challenge I have overcome is not giving a shit about what people might think of me. That was something I struggled with since 5th grade when I came home from my summer trip to Washington fat enough to make my mom scream "holy shit!" at the sight of me. I got fit in high school, then fat again after the accident, and now somewhat fit again -- I'm actually a little underweight, at 148 lbs and 6' foot tall, and I could definitely work out more, since this utoob shit cut my workouts down from 4 days a week to 2. Anyways, low self esteem caused me to do a lot of dumb shit over the years. And it's funny that I should overcome it now, since I have a disability that should make me feel more self-conscious, but I'm happy as all hell that I did because life is so much easier now that I don't concern myself with other people's actual thoughts about me, or the ones I would make up in my mind. I'm not totally free from it, however. I still lapse into my old ways from time to time. Vanity has a way of doing that to a person.

1

u/RichardInaTreeFort Feb 01 '20

What kinds of things do you do for physical exercise?

5

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

At home I have ankle weights strapped to my forearms so I can do bicep curls, shoulder raises, and fist pumps, for lack of a better term. But twice a week I go to an Adaptive PE class at my college that allows me to do much more formal workouts such as the lat pulldown, bench press, and seated rows.

1

u/Sonja-K Feb 01 '20

I know, some videogames are offering "special settings for handicapped people" - like the option "to just press one button", but this option will press "the several buttons (that are needed at once in this situation) for you".

Are there any "more quadriplegic-friendly settings" that are missing, or that you would like to have, while playing Rocket League ?

Or options you know about, also other gamers with limited or no hand-/fingerfunction would consider as really helpful/beneficial in Rocket League ?

3

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

Hi Sonja =)

Games are getting better and better for us cripples. And even though they have their faults, I'd say Ubisoft is leading the charge.

I think Psyonix has a harder time making Rocket League cripple friendly though, since it is a skill-based game that requires a lot of coordination and reflexes, but one thing I've been asking for is being able to configure multiple keys to the same function. Having boost on "V" works best for me on most occasions, but I found that having it on "H" is much more useful when dribbling. So hopefully they'll add that feature along with the key rebinding and mouse steering they already have in place for accessibility.

2

u/ZachTheGunner2 Champion I Feb 01 '20

This is possible by editing the config. You can do completely custom controls pretty much. I use my right thumbstick for dedicated air roll, and I wanted it to have pitch control as well, so now both sticks can pitch the car up or down. There's some threads about it if you search around.

3

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

This is why I love PC gaming, there's always a work around. Thanks for the info dude!

1

u/Somewhere-in-a-lake Radish III Feb 01 '20

What was your life like before you got injured?

7

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

Not great, actually. The accident was actually a good thing, to some extent. I mean, my life was actually fantastic, but it took hindsight to reveal the issues. Let me briefly explain wtf I'm on about.

As I mentioned in a different answer, I have struggled with being the fat kid for a lot of my life and all of the self esteem issues that come with it. So when I finally dropped the weight in high school and proceeded to replace it with muscle, I was not mentally prepared for the popularity that followed shortly after. It didn't do good things to my personality. I became the selfish, egotistical douchebag I always despised. Had the accident not occurred, I'm fearful of the man I would be today.

Getting crippled humbled me and helped me see all of the things my closest friends and family were trying to tell me about how I was changing. I miss my legs, but I'm happy to be myself again.

I do, rarely. And only rarely still does it have the desired effect. Most people just get defensive and double down on their douchebaggery. As I mentioned in the video with Sunless, telling one guy that I only play with two fingers led him to telling me that "that leaves 8 to shove up my ass." Another guy tried to tell me that my situation didn't matter, I should still be able to play better. Although he apologized to my angry comment on his Steam profile when he sobered up the next day.

The first thing that comes to mind is what most recognized people say they want, which is "The real [insert person's named here]" just because I've been asked that so much I'm starting to wonder if I am actually real or not. Other than that, I would want something funny. Although what I find funny is usually too offensive for people these days, like "Carried Cripple" or something. Actually, something simple like "Handicapped" would work. And it would be awesome if it could be given to all verified disabled players. I say verified because I have had multiple people pretend to be paralyzed in order to get close to me. I can only imagine what some people would do to get an in-game title.

What’s your favorite thing about rocket league?

2

u/HellOnWheels357 Quadnick Feb 01 '20

I think the best thing about Rocket League is how accomplished it makes me feel when I do something good. I get an overwhelming sense of satisfaction. Chasing that feeling is what keeps me coming back to the game even after 2700 hours of gameplay.

No question, just stay awesome. Hope to see you in a video with Bruce Greene (or any content creator you dream to work with), I just think he's awesome and would be great to work with for them funny moments in videos.

Have you tried any fight sticks?

I don't have much experience with them myself but from what i've seen there are so many of them and with different layouts that you might very well be able to find a layout that works for you in a way that allows you to press multiple buttons at once.

Really love your content and the way you embrace and are embraced by the rocket community. As I eagerly await my chance to be on AYBTAQ I have a few questions.

Have you thought about going into adult entertainment? If so what category of adult film would you take place in? Who would be the youtuber/twitch streamer you'd take on your adult entertainment journey? What's the fastest speed you've hit someone with you chair? Have you repented recently?

What's the fastest speed you've hit someone with you chair?

Idk about him but that one did hit me hard.

Lmao. Of course I have thought about it. Who hasn't? I would take any position they would give me. Giggity intended. I would take you with me of course. I know that's why you asked.

As for hitting people with my chair, thankfully that has not happened at any great speed. Although the few times it did happen I nailed them right in the Achilles heel. It probably hurt worse than a full-on ram to the face.

So far the worst incident I have had involving an out-of-control wheelchair was either when my grandpa sent me flying into a TV and a potted plant when he was trying to put my arm back on my chair after a workout, or the time we strapped my German Shepherd to my manual chair and called him forward, dragging me into gravel that launched me out of my chair and flat on my face causing my tooth to stab through my lower lip.
