City of Puyallup is kicking the Downtown fire station out in favor of...jail parking.

Throwaway for obvious reasons.

Title. The city is looking to not renew, or even break, the lease for the downtown fire department station. There has been a fire engine downtown since 1890 and in the current building since the 70's. Now the closest engine to down town is either a) across the train tracks on river road, or b) next to the YMCA on south hill.

TBF I guess the city wants jail parking more than they want fast response times for fires and EMS calls for it's downtown citizens.

In 2028 we're going to be stuck with "Mayor King" 🤢

We really need people to vote in local elections. He won by such a small margin.

I’m curious, what is Central Pierce’s stance? Are they trying to build a new station? Is resource allocation different after the merger with Graham and Orting?

Lots missing for a full opinion.

As far as the future, who knows, there's been talks of a new staffed fair station for years. The only other option would be staffing the vacant station off Shaw, but that has it's own response area that does not include downtown.

A staffed downtown station on both sides of the tracks seems important. Knowing that building, I’d think even fire would want to be out of there fast.

I thought the jail was supposed to be moved up to the new police station on the hill?

Police station is moving, jail is staying. CPFR does not own station 73 or 71.

Pierce stance is that by adding more paid parking, they can reduce the 20year 5 lane widening of shaw rd down to 15 years.

This is interesting because I don't believe there is any paid parking downtown except for the fairgrounds. So what makes them think people will pay for parking on some random lot?

To clarify, so far the parking will be for the jail. Not public parking. Also, Central Pierce the fire department has no dog in fight for public parking.

Are they trying to take over station 73? Will Station 70 and 71 be able to handle the increased area of responsibility?

Station 73 will be a parking lot. Station 70 (the fair station) isn't staffed except during fairs. 71 will have to cover their first due and 73's first due

So they expect one tiny station (one engine & one med unit) to cover the entire Puyallup Valley?
