OMG??? My first isekai before I even knew what isekai was (well, this and Fushigi Yuugi) 🥺🥺 I'm actually so excited for this

I’m excited too. 🩷🩷 I still have the first local edition of the manga, and just bought the VizBig edition volumes to celebrate the anime release - not that I really needed an excuse. 😄
Anyway. Red River is not really isekai, but rather a time travel story (with a sprinkle of fantasy) - the protagonist doesn’t gets transported to another world like Miaka in Fushigi Yuugi, she simply goes back in time to an ancient empire that really existed. It’s part of what makes the series so unique and interesting.

Wow! I thought the ship had sailed for an anime. So happy to see it getting an adaptation! With modern animation too!
I wonder if, with all the popularity in OI, there has been a resurgence in interest in Red River.
They are redoing the Magic Knight Rayearth anime too. It’s another otome Isekai.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they remake the original Fushigi Yuugi anime at this point.

u/BlankHeroineFluff Feb 15 '26
If I had to guess, it's probably a combination of OI resurgence like you said, plus the fact that anime has become globally mainstream. They probably want to capitalize on that for sure. Shoujo works in general have also seen an uptick recently too, based on the amount of shoujo anime we've been getting lately.
Though I am surprised that Red River got greenlit given how long the entire story is and how anime nowadays tend to limit themselves to 13 eps at most. Then again, full adaptations of finished manga are on the rise recently, though still not as many as everyone hopes they would be.

I thought the smut alone would have made it impossible to greenlight
14
u/BlankHeroineFluff Feb 15 '26
Well, if something like Redo of Healer can get an anime adaptation despite its, um, questionable content (and it was even infamously popular during its airing), then Red River's smutty scenes, which are nowhere near as gratuitous as Redo's, wouldn't be too big of a massive hurdle in terms of it being adapted (at least nowadays anyway).

I know! So exciting. If they do kanata kara too I would die from happiness

Kanata Kara is also getting an anime adaptation. I haven’t watched anime in a while but when this comes out I will definitely watch it

Sorry, the only link I could find was this post on x and it has pics from the manga. I hope the anime doesn’t butcher them

Fushigi Yuugi and Kanata Kara would make this perfect!

u/ciaogo Feb 15 '26
Fushigi Yuugi has been animated.
3
u/HappyGlitterUnicorn Feb 15 '26
Yes. But the original anime is a bit outdated. I wish for a remake like what they are doing with MKR.
1
u/ciaogo Feb 15 '26
Ah I see, yeah that’d be nice. Always liked Fushigi Yuugi’s realistic approach to isekai and wished more stories showed the difficulty in adjusting to a different world.

u/Harukogirl Feb 15 '26
So, Red River is currently being re-released as a 3-in-1 edition in the US
I’m really hoping this means some of Shinohara’s OTHER series finally get released- I have a bunch in Japanese and tbh Red River is far from my favorite by her

Nooo hopefully not fushigi yuugi. The OG anime is brilliantly done. Sometimes remake isn't better (actually most times). They should def make the Genbu Kaiden version tho (prequel of Fushigi Yuugi)
2
u/honorspren000 Feb 16 '26
Yeah, I was not really impressed with a few of the Sailor Moon Crystal arcs remakes. The first two seasons weren’t very good, but I liked their S and SuperS seasons. But when they did their Stars remake, I didn’t like how they made all the sailor guardians look like 12 year olds. Every season had a different director I think.
But yeah, I’d be interested if they did an anime for Genbu Kaiden, although they might need to wait a bit because it hasn’t been finished. The artist just came back from a several year hiatus.

I've been waiting for this since I was 13, reading this book that had a 16+ (or 18+) sticker on it in the mature teen section of the library, like nearly 20 years ago.
I'm excited to revisit the series as a person with life experience now!

I started reading Red River before Viz started putting explicit content stickers on their manga. The first one on the cover was on a pretty late volume (19, I think?) and I remember stacking them very carefully on my bookshelf so my parents wouldn't see it. 😂 Red River is so tame compared to others. I was like 13 and super innocent and caught completely off guard by Ceres: celestial legend. I wish that one had had an explicit content sticker to warn me.

That's much more surprising than the announcement that Yona of the Dawn is getting a season 2.

YO this is the series that got me into specializing in archeology!! I study the Hittite Empire and the Akkadian language as a job now!! This series has deserved an anime for FOREVER
8
u/KyraJolie Feb 16 '26
This! I had to change majors because of scheduling and stuff and didn't know where I wanted to go. And I read this and became so obsessed.
I couldn't actually use my degree go into archaeology for financial reasons, but I did go into teaching instead.
It's so amazing to hear that you could though! This was my dream because of this anime. Congratulations on getting to live the life!
(Also, got any papers published I could read? )
3
u/Actual_Play_Bae Feb 16 '26
Thank you for the congrats!! It's been a long road, but I'm here :D
I don't study the Hittites exclusively; my area of expertise is in death practices within ancient cultures. The Hittites are just my fave ;) I don't have any papers published at the moment (I prefer field work) but I have several colleagues at the German Archeological Institute who do!

u/KyraJolie Feb 16 '26
I have read some of those that I can find translated. But that is an awesome expertise area. One of my professor friends focuses on seals from the near east so she used to send me things she came across.
Good luck in the field and stay safe!

OH MY GOD YEEEES THE MAIN ANTAGONIST OF THIS MANGA IS THE DRAMAAAAA CAN'T WAIT!
9
u/Natapi24 Feb 15 '26
I'm so delighted!! This was literally my first OI back when I was a teenager before I knew what the genre actually was or started reading it regularly. So cool to see it getting adapted!
5
u/AyaFredjas Feb 15 '26
If that permit it to get officialy translate and print in my country that would be heaven!

Isn't this one of the longest running shoujos/first shoujos Isekai?
2
u/BlankHeroineFluff Feb 18 '26
Yeah, but Ouke no Monshou/Crest of the Royal Family, its fellow shoujo isekai manga, is way longer. Red River at least ended in 2002 after it was first released in 1995, but Ouke no Monshou is still ongoing to this day after its first publication in 1976.

u/runningandhiding Feb 17 '26
Omg!!!! I loved this one! This one gave me mental endorphin feed for YEARS

omg wow! I thought about buying the manga recently but I chose to read something else before starting this one >o<
It looked very interesting for a Shoujo(?) Isekai

I was interested until I found out that it has A LOT of rape. The FL is 14/15 when she is wisked away and the ML is around his 20's. So of course he and other male characters sexually assault or rape her. I hate that they bring this type of shit back to the present, instead of leaving it in the past. As if we STILL don't have this bullshit being pushed on us in stories these days. I am fed up with RAPE "shoujo" and pedophilia.

u/Agreeable-Anybody-67 Feb 21 '26
Not exactly Yes, she is victimes of several attempts, including by the male lead, but she is never raped One is not long after their first meeting, but personally I do not consider it an attempt since he stops as soon as he réalisés that she's not willing (and that she's not like the other women of his world ; pretty logic since she comes from a time where a girl of her age is definitely not supposed to have sex, unlike his time) The other is much, much later and is within a spécial : basically, after two years of living together, it is getting more and more difficult for male lead to accept that she is going to leave him and go back to her world. So basically it is some sort of breakdown. Thankfully though, he eventually has a réalisation of what he's about to do and this stops here If you really can't stand it, then yeah you shouldn't read it, but personally I don't think it's that bad since there is a contexte and hé eventually never rapes her, even being extremelt respectful of her I think we should just remember that this was made in the 90s after all
1
u/Jazzy_Beat Feb 20 '26
Is the male lead good in this? I usually watch shoujo anime when the male lead is good and not some insufferable douche.
2
u/Agreeable-Anybody-67 Feb 21 '26
He's very good, overall However he does have some bad moments, he's not utterly perfect Just remember that this was made in the 90s But basically, the guy has an unconditional love for the female lead that he almost (definitely ?) sees as a goddess
1
u/Jazzy_Beat Feb 21 '26
Yea, not really a big fan of that. Also I read that there is so much SA content in the series and that it has “aged poorly”. Not the kind of series I was hoping for unfortunately.
2
u/Agreeable-Anybody-67 Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 23 '26
I wouldn't exactly agree on that. I've read that "aged poorly" comment and trust me, that's quite a misuse (lol, I don't know if that word actually exists) I'd say, that depends on your tolérance towards this

Moreover, it's not like that's all there is to the story
The characters, the settings, the pacing, the epic, the historical aspect... In my opinion, this largely compensates for that aspect if that is considéred a flaw
1
u/Jazzy_Beat Feb 21 '26
Yea, unfortunately I can’t stand SA. Like I understand if it happened unsuccessfully once in a series for plot reasons, but it seems to happen multiple times with different characters in this one. I literally dropped a few series before because I was unaware something like that was gonna happen. At least I found out beforehand for this series.

u/EmberLeighJoy Apr 27 '26
I haven't been interested in an Isekai since Fushigi Yuugi. I cried when I saw this. I have read the manga so many times. I'm so excited. Can summer not come any sooner?

I just saw this in shoujo sub with another old manga as well.. seems like we're getting classics adapted Yay because sometimes I struggle reading classics since they have different style and very text heavy
