Advice PSA: waterloo engineering programs being a substitute for cs

syde tron mse even ece - none of these eng programs will cover cs as much as cs programs, shockingly

before choosing, make sure you actually want to do something related to hardware / electrical / robotics / mechanical / data analysis. look at every required course for the degree and check if it interests you.

about ai fears -

if your end goal is just being a swe, choosing engineering is not going to set you up better for software jobs. ask yourself, would having less fundamental cs knowledge make me more replaceable by ai. again, this only applies for software jobs. but so many students in these eng programs are just interested in software.

only choose these programs if you're willing to compete for engineering jobs not in software.

one last thing, you can still make friends without being in a cohort. the eng cohort helps with making friends quickly buuut it could limit opportunities to make friends in upper years when you always see the same familiar faces in class and have less time in eng for clubs. cs also has cohort sections in 1a now.

that's all for now. peace out.

But in terms of job, employers wouldn't care about whether you did engineering or cs tho right (for swe)

Also im deciding between utsc cs coop and mac eng (no free choice) and im interesed in swe, but im afraid that in cs, i have to do lots of proof, so even then, should i choose uoft?
