Pregunta Personal Cat bit my foot, preventive rabbies shots?

A small cat that hangs around here quite often bit my foot yesterday randomly late at night… It was under the table, at a hotel i'm hanging out often at, and yesterday i never saw it close and when i got up, it got jumpscared or something and bit my foot out of the blue. Was probably sleeping/laying next to me but i never noticed until it got me that sneaky bastard....

Do you know if there’s much cases of rabbies being discussed around here? Or where i could get booster shots just in case? 🙂 I went to the clinic here, but they didn't have anything on end, and we're sunday so most clinics around (tola center) is closed.

Any tips? Let me know, thank you!

yeah 100%, its just my friend here works with the strays; she says there definitely is rabbies around the area and I should def get the boosters. They're involved hands-on in the popoyo paws movement in town.. So yeah nothing reassuring haha! Rather be on the safe side

Just go to a public health center and tell em what happened they keep track of rabbies in the area so they'll tell you since it was a stray most likely you'll get a tetanus shot and be sent home

You’ll get anything but cat rabbies in Nicaragua. Just make sure you keep it clean.

what makes you say so? a friend here is doing voluntary vet work and says there is a bunch of rabid cases for animals around. Better be safe. I'm trying my shot at the centro de salud de tola tomorrow.

There hasn't been a rabbies case in Nica since the 60s maybe. If that cat had rabbies it would have probably died a while ago. Chill with the paranoia you are more likely to get rabbies from a racoon in the US.

If you know where the cat stays or know the person that owns it then check on the cat every few days, if the cat is ok 10 days after it bit you then you don’t have to worry about rabies. If the cat was shedding the virus in its saliva when it bit you then it will show signs of rabies within 10 days or sooner. The biggest risk from a cat bite is an infected wound. Cats have a lot of germs in their mouths.
