Some select a background stitch based on the central design and take into consideration if it would look best with a vertical background stitch, horizontal stitch, or diagonal background stitch slanting to the right or left, and take into consideration the amount of compensation around the central image. Many try to avoid large areas of compensation that call for larger areas of compensating continental stitch, losing the pattern of the decorative stitch.
