Why are the Russian and Soviet anthems so far apart? If you’re basing it on lyrics, you know there are at least three different variants of the Soviet anthem’s lyrics, right? Which one is at the top?

By Soviet anthem I mean the last variant of the lyrics (1977). The reason Russia's anthem is so far behind the Soviet's one is because the lyrics in the Soviet anthem talk about unity, freedom, brotherhood, and sacrifice, concepts that, even though I don't agree with Soviet/communist ideology, it is still powerful. Furthermore, the Soviet anthem refers to the struggle of the people, compared to Russia's "our sacred homeland". It's the difference between "we built this together" and "this land is mine". And also, put that melody behind "Lenin’s great cause inspires us to labor" vs "A mighty will, a great glory" and you'll see what I mean.

There's more: the Soviet anthem has layers of drama and history, from World War II victory, to Cold War tension, Space Race glory, and Global Communism movements. The Russian anthem, while beautiful and still powerful, just isn't world-shaking enough. The USSR's anthem was designed to inspire the entire world, not just Russia and the Russians. So yeah, the Soviet anthem just appeals to me more.

Fair enough, makes sense! I will say that the modern lyrics’ use of concepts like простор does envoke many of those feelings that you mention not being present; however, it’s one of those words that basically impossible to fully translate, so just reading the translated lyrics doesn’t do the modern version justice.

Just a note that Dominion hasn’t been used in Canada in any capacity for several decades, it hasn’t been part of our official name since the 1950s or 1960s
