Posts like this are always so interesting to me because a ton of people are like "Steven Universe" when that was the first show I thought of that was NOT an example of this. I always felt like up until Future, Steven was often just a proxy for the gems relationships with Rose. And sure he took up a fair bit of screen time but I always thought he was hugely underappreciated compared to how much the Fandom loved each of the gems. People obsessed over each and every frame with Pearl/Amethyst/Garnet in it and then just blew right past any Steven stuff.

I guess im definitely in the minority there lol

Yeah that was my thought too. He's the main character and it's not like the female characters' development and focus is neglected in favor of him. If anything it's the opposite. Steven is constantly trying to play fix-it for the gems' trauma and problems that should never have been his responsibility. It's only towards the end and in Future that he's finally given a chance to deal with how much that fucked up him. The majority of the fandom content as the series was airing was definitely more focused on the gem characters and their relationships as well, or otherwise theorizing about Rose and the lore/backstory.
