Another long overdue honor for a bona fide box score menace, Yohandy Morales struck for two home runs and a double on Friday, including the game-tying shot in the bottom of the ninth (3-5, 2 HR, 2B, BB, 3 RBI, 3 R). Morales’ late-game heroics forced the contest to extra innings, where the Rochester Red Wings would ultimately take it from the Syracuse Mets, 9-8. The Nationals’ twenty-eighth ranked prospect out of the University of Miami is now batting .352/.428/.610 with twelve home runs in fifty games for the Red Wings. Interestingly, Morales still finds himself in traffic to the big leagues. Former first round draft pick Brady House was recently sent back to Rochester for more frequent playing time at third base, while across the diamond, twenty-fifth ranked prospect Abimelec Ortiz is also lighting up Triple-A pitching. Meanwhile, one of the most productive offenses in the bigs is piecing it together just fine with Luis Garcia Jr., and Curtis Mead, et al. There is some potential platoon/bench flexibility between guys like Nasim Nunez, Jorbit Vivas, and Jose Tena; the Nationals will need to decide who the next man up is, and what caliber of playing time they want to give them.
Honorable shoutouts: Brody Hopkins (DUR), Jace Jung (TOL), Michael Toglia (LOU), Ryan Fitzgerald (OKC)
