Building & Design Shadows of Isildur Engine

Hey guys,

So I’m an old player of the LOTR RPI mod Shadows of Isildur - I am really sad that it disappeared the way it did.

I would love to try to recreate it somehow. I know the released the engine a looooong time ago and that it was available for download. Has anyone got access to it? Or know how I could get my hands on it? It used a version of DikuMUD iirc.

Thanks a lot and best of wishes

Here's what I used when I played around with DIKU, it is allegedly what SOI ran off of

Thanks a lot. I’m new to this so I’ll have to figure out how to set it up. Is it difficult?

heya - this is actually the most up to date version and has a bash script to get it running: https://github.com/Sebguer/OpenRPI

Happy to support you playing around with it. With modern LLMs it's not hard to get it working, though, as long as you have a way to run a linux server or virtual machine.

Wow thanks a lot. I will set up a Linux VM and I’m already having an LLM guide me through the setup.

What I am really lacking and I’m unsure how to deal with it, is any potential player logs I could use to be able to get room descriptions and map layouts. I’d like to create Osgiliath first as a first pass and then expand from there if it’s working right. I also never played Minas Morgul so I wouldn’t be able to recreate it without outside help.

I have copies of the region files from back in the day. I cannot remember if they cleanly import into this version. (I explained the timeline on this version above but it's actually from the Atonement era and so by default has guns vs archery, I can't remember if Stefan's has the hacky reimplementation or not but I've had no problem getting Claude to add bows to my fork).

Shoot me a dm with your discord and happy to chat about it!
