When to try amino acid formula?

If you have switched to an amino acid formula, how did you get to that point?

My son is 11 weeks and is currently on Nutramigen. The blood in his stool has resolved. However, he will still have episodes of inconsolable crying and screaming. He only eats 1.5-2 ounces at a time unless we try to force feed him which we obviously don't want to do. The doctor keeps saying as long as he is having wet diapers and gaining weight he is okay but the crying/screaming for hours is so hard. He is also gaining weight slowly (about .5 ounces a day). We have a speech eval next week to evaluate his latch to see if that could be a barrier for him. I just don't know if the formula is still bothering him.

If you’ve tried the Nutramigen for at least 2+ weeks, you could try the amino acid and see if it helps his fussiness. We breastfed for 4 weeks, kiddo hated life. If he was awake he was crying. NP had a hunch and tested for blood in stool that was positive (wasn’t visible), moved to Alimentum for 3ish weeks. Initially he was so much better, within a few days I thought we had fixed it. But a few more days and he was back to a fussy and angry all the time. But gaining excellent weight. Our NP suggested we try Neocate and see if that helps with the fussiness. So we moved to Neocate to see if we could solve his anger issues. He improved drastically, noticed improvement within a week and kept getting better. Like whole new baby improved. He’s happy, he smiles, coos…like who is this kid??! It’s been 4ish weeks and I’m so glad we progressed to amino acid. It’s worth a shot to see. Worst case nothing changes.

I knew in my gut that she still needed help. Her symptoms weren’t fully resolved and she was fussy and colicky. Took about 6-8 weeks on Neocate to improve.

We just pushed through week 7 on Neocate Syneo and are finally starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. I read so many posts that said 2-4wks max. Someone else on Reddit said 6-8wks. I was convinced it wasn’t working and in the last 4 days or so we’ve finally seen improvements in her diapers. I think these formulas just take a lot of time to heal baby’s gut and see improvement. I hope your baby feels better soon!
