I personally love Jacksonville and I have lived in many places. It’s more affordable than Charleston and there are less tourists. We are large, so you may put a lot of miles on your car, but there are neighborhoods for any lifestyle. I am near the Beach, lived here for 20 years and couldn’t be happier

charleston is prettier right away but jacksonville feels way easier to actually live in long term. less touristy pressure and people feel more normal/down to earth honestly

No income taxes in Florida. Jacksonville is two hours away from Jacksonville. I liked living there but if you’re looking for a vibrant in downtown, it doesn’t exist.

Hmmmm, not sure where would be more miserable. Probably have to pick Charleston because well otherwise you're living in Florida

I've never lived in Charleston but I have family that lives there and visit there occasionally. It's cool but unless you have a job lined up (and a pretty well paying one), I wouldn't personally relocate there. If you do live in Jacksonville, you're not too far to take a weekend trip to Charleston (which is, imo, the best way to enjoy it, because you can feel comfortable dropping wads of cash over one weekend rather than every weekend lol). I love Jacksonville but it obviously depends on where you live. Even in the nicer areas and by the beach, it's cheaper than Charleston, largely because...there's not as much going on here, tbh. The job market is also not great, though that may depend on what you do for a living. I don't think it's great anywhere, though, to be fair.

Thank you for your comment, I'm sensing unjustified hate for JAX when asking elsewhere so I really appreciate the objective, local insights. What makes the job market so bad? I work in Marketing and considering a career change. Spouse is an engineer.

Most people who I know who have moved here without a job lined up have taken at least several months sometimes a year to find a job. I don't know anything beyond that.

The job market isn’t bad in jax. Especially for the two careers you and your spouse are in. Jax gets a lot of hate but it’s come a long way. No hurricanes, no sinkholes, a growing economy and downtown. If you want historic there’s Avondale/Riverside, MH, SM, Springfield and st Aug. if you want beach there’s beach if you want suburbs there’s South side. Try posting in the other jax sub.

Do you want a nice older city or the largest small town in America?
