Itinerary !!MUST PROVIDE TRAVEL DATES!! Itinerary advice request

My husband and I will be in Italy for the first time from Sept 29-Oct 15, and I'm looking for some itinerary advice. We enjoy history, food, art, cars, hiking, and relaxation to offset the craziness.

Pompeii is a necessity, but not sure if a day trip from Rome would suffice or if we should stay near Amalfi coast for a few days. That said, I have seen single day trips from Rome that include seeing Sorrento and some of the Amalfi coast, but that seems pretty rushed.

I'd love to just take the train back to Rome from Florence the day that we leave, but the flight leaves at 10:30am, and I don't really want that extra stress.

9/29-10/3(10/5 if no Amalfi): Rome (we arrive around 10pm)

*10/3: train to Naples then ferry to Sorrento

*10/3-10/5: Sorrento/Amalfi coast

10/5: back to Naples for train to Bologna

10/5-10/8: Bologna/Modena/Parma (Stay in Bologna)

10/8: train to Florence to pick up rental car

10/8-10/11: Tuscany (likely agritourismo stay)

10/11-10/14: Florence

10/14: train back to Rome, stay overnight one more night

10/15: fly back home

My wife and I have finally realized that this isn't our last trip to Italy/France, etc.

The days when you travel will be fun, but you won't see many sites. So 10/3, 10/5, 10/8, 10/11 (to a lesser extent), and 10/14 are lost to travel.

My point being, I'd rather spend more time in one area than run around a lot.

For example, if you're going to be in Sorrento or Amalfi, that's a good base for a day trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius. Lots of tours to choose from . If you don't do Sorrento/Amalfi, look at day tours from Rome and decide if you want that stress.

You're only spending one day without travel in Sorrento/Amalfi, I think I'd drop this part of the trip.

PS--Do you really arrive in Rome around 10 pm? Flights from the US usually are overnight and arrive around 10 am.

Thanks for the advice. I don't really want to do Amalfi, since everything I've read about it seems like not my type of thing. That's part of why I posted, since Pompeii is literally one of the few definite places my husband and I would like to see.

Plane arrives at 9:50pm, I'm not mistaken. I have an unfortunate 7hr layover in Frankfort, since it was either 1hr 15min or 7hr, and I didn't want to chance missing my connection.
