Yesterday I found one of my female BDFB (blue death feigning beetles) motionless. Her name is Grenda. I had disturbed the tank and figured when I moved the hide, she had been startled and was feigning death. I've been checking on her for the past 24+ hours and only her antenna is moving. Grenda is not in the same position I found her but I am unsure if perhaps she was bumped by another beetle (if I had to guess, I'd say Jerry wanted a tango partner. Jerry is a bit of a scoundrel.)
I am absolutely baffled as to what's happening or what I should do. I had given them a hornworm moth and they readily devoured that. It had been a hornworm for my lizard but pupated, so I let it live its life. It had eaten a bell pepper as I ran out of hornworm chow and I know my BDFBs would not eat peppers. Now I'm wondering if there's a possibility that the pepper impacted the moth sort of like how if we eat fish that has too much mercury, we get mercury poisoning. But I am just freaking out and speculating on any difference I can think of in the tank.
They also recently lost their tank mate, a velvet ant, and they had been nibbling on her corpse before I tracked her down. I can't imagine that they got some of her venom since they're sold as being suitable tankmates, but that is the only other change to the tank I can think of.
I've got Grenda in isolation and will continue to monitor but I'm wondering 1) has anyone had any experience with BDFB doing this? 2) am I prolonging her suffering? 3) any suggestions on how I can help her and her tankmates?
