the thing is that everytime a hunter or survivor gets released people are always complaining about op this and op that when lowkey prolly just a skill issue of players
no, every new character has been op. lanternist hides cipher shaking so there is no way to find the last cipher being worked on, matador cannot be countered and you basically need to just deal with his stun since there’s nothing else u can do. dentist in the hands of a good dentist player can make rescuing impossible. all three of these characters have no counterplay other than player error. lanternist only takes normal dmg if u don’t pull back the illusion fast enough, matador only doesn’t work if u miss the cleave, u can only rescue against dentist if u force him to do a normal hit but since hunters move faster than survs, he can theoretically just move out of normal hit range repeatedly and keep hitting chips. mime artist will be another one of these, where you literally cannot do anything to counter her umbrella and you just have to go to wherever the umbrella launched her.
i’m a hunter main and i agree that hunters are always “op” on release so ??? and that’s how hunters are supposed to work, they force the survs to adapt and learn a new playstyle and figure them out. except when the hunter is too op and doesn’t have a balancing aspect. dentist has no atk recovery, deals dmg with every hit, and deals long range dmg. hulla, the other hunter with no atk recovery, needs to land 3 hits for 1 unit of dmg, and has a limited amount of long range hits. in addition, the main strat ppl use to rescue against dentist is to force his atk recovery, but this highly depends on the skill of both the hunter and the survivor since the hunter will theoretically always be able to avoid this strat. meanwhile, opera singer is stopped by pallet spam, something that does not depend on skill at all. yes, the meta hunters seem op at first but once you figure them out/know how to deal with them they just become strong hunters.
no??? there is no way for the hunter to find a lanternist cipher unless they manually go to each cipher. there is no counterplay or adapting to lanternist cipher skill. in addition, there is no way to counter matador’s cleave because no matter what you’re trying to do, you’re gonna take the hit and get the speed debuff. mime artist seems similar, where you can’t do anything after she flies away except just manually go to wherever she went. these are all op survivors because, just like dentist, there’s no counterplay in a theoretical scenario where both players don’t make major mistakes.
in addition, each game’s gameplay is supposed to be centered around the hunter. (eg. the way you kite, the way you rescue, dealing with gimmicks) survivors are supposed to adapt to each hunter. hunters are not supposed to entirely change their gameplay strategy to deal with one survivor.
