How do they know
I typically use the Acme app to clip coupons while sitting in my car. Today I forgot. I went in. Got grapes, bananas, a head of lettuce, tomatoes on a vine. Perdue chicken breasts. When I got to taco sauce I thought I should check the app for coupons. When I opened it there were deals for exactly the things I had already put in the cart: the exact grapes, the exact tomatoes, the brand of chicken. My phone had been in my pocket. It was creepy. How???

How often do you buy grapes, tomatoes, and Purdue chicken?
Quite frequently I bet.
Of course you could go to Grocery store X, but Acme already has what you're looking for on sale so why bother?
Oh and hey, since they saved you $3 on the items you already buy, live a little and pickup that shiny object next to the registers with a high markup/profit margin.

If those items already had coupons, the app knows that. They probably took note of what people had been buying that day, and our them up front.
