Discussion (includes analysis) Project Stuzha might be Genshin’s version of Fimbulwinter
I’ve been thinking about Project Stuzha, and I’m starting to believe it may be Genshin’s equivalent of Fimbulwinter from Norse mythology.
Not necessarily in the literal sense of “the Fatui freeze all of Teyvat and everyone gets turned into a popsicle,” but more in the mythological sense: a great winter that comes before the end of the current world order.
In Norse myth, Fimbulwinter is the brutal winter that happens before Ragnarök. It is not the final apocalypse itself, but the event that sets the stage for it. It brings collapse, desperation, violence, darkness, and eventually leads into the war of the gods.
That sounds suspiciously close to where Genshin’s main story seems to be heading.
The Tsaritsa is already preparing for rebellion against the divine. The Fatui have been collecting the Gnoses, Snezhnaya is being positioned as the final nation before Khaenri’ah/Celestia-level reveals, and Project Stuzha seems important enough that several Harbingers are involved or affected by it.
The name itself also matters. “Stuzha” means severe cold/bitter frost, and its localized meanings seem to lean into the idea of a “severe winter” or “winter operation.” That feels way too deliberate to just be aesthetic.
My theory is that Project Stuzha is not the apocalypse. It is the pre-apocalypse protocol.
The Fatui may be trying to create a world-scale “winter” that destabilizes Teyvat and weakens Celestia’s current order. This could be literal, symbolic, or both.
A literal version would be some kind of supernatural winter spreading from Snezhnaya or Nod-Krai.
A symbolic version would be political, spiritual, and cosmic collapse: nations breaking down, faith in Celestia weakening, fate becoming unstable, and the “false sky” system starting to fail.
The strongest version might be both at once.
This is also where Mistilteinn becomes interesting. Columbina’s connection to Project Stuzha and the mention of Mistilteinn makes me think Stuzha could be the “winter” phase, while Mistilteinn is the weapon/key/ritual component.
So the structure could be something like:
- Project Stuzha creates the Fimbulwinter condition
- Mistilteinn acts as the weapon or key needed to strike at Celestia
- The Tsaritsa uses the Gnoses and the chaos of Stuzha to begin the actual rebellion against the divine
Basically, Stuzha may be the storm before Ragnarök, and Mistilteinn may be the blade meant to cut through the system.
This would also fit Genshin’s recurring themes: frozen grief, preserved civilizations, broken fate, false heavens, dead gods, divine punishment, and people trying to escape a world order built on lies.
The Tsaritsa being the Cryo Archon makes this even more fitting. Her element is ice, but thematically, Cryo in Genshin is often tied to contradiction: love and loss, preservation and stagnation, rebellion and loyalty. A “winter before the end” fits her perfectly.
So my current read is:
Project Stuzha is Genshin’s Fimbulwinter; not just a freezing plan, but a world-ending preparation phase designed to make rebellion against Celestia possible.
The Tsaritsa may not be trying to destroy Teyvat directly. She may be trying to force Teyvat into the conditions necessary to finally break Celestia’s control.
Which is honestly very Fatui. Horrible ethics, immaculate drama.

"Project Stuzha" in the Japanese version is just 厳冬計画 (Severe Winter Project), so at the base level, it’s a fairly literal naming. Like, "a plan involving severe winter." The English version using "Stuzha" in russian is to add style for the nation I think. the eng dub likes to use words from the languages the nation represents a lot more than any other language version

Most of those are actually likely to be chosen by Hoyo themselves to begin with, and the literal namings in Chinese generally translations to Chinese. Genshin takes inspirations from stories, history, legends and myths from all over the world, it's extremely unlikely that Hoyo has written all lore in Chinese only, and told the respective loc teams to translate them.
An easy example, the name Azhdaha appears only in the English version, but in the Azhdaha BTS video uploaded by Hoyo they specifically mention they referred to the legend of Azi Dahaka and filmed themselves searching up Azhdaha in English Wikipedia. The name Deshret is also never used in the Chinese version and many Chinese players have no idea the Scarlet King has a name, but it's not the English version just randomly deciding to invent a name because the Eternal Oasis has a chair with DSHRT engraved in desert font.
Lore terms in the Chinese version are very literal because Chinese is a language that is particularly disadvantaged when transliterating foreign pronunciations, which you can observe just from the character names. Pari -> forest spirit, Gnosis -> god heart, Project Stuzha -> harsh winter project, etc. Not the other way round.
And Allogenes -> Genshin/Yuanshen.

Which is why it is hilarious that in the Chinese lore community people say "check the English translation!" while in English people say "check the Chinese original!" and both of them are kind of right.

Yeah haha. And ideally cross-check other languages as well.
My favorite example is Furina's constellation name Animula Choragi. Both CN and EN (ajd JP) players had no idea how to understand and interpret the name because the Chinese version also said "singer of odes". Enter Korean version which makes the unusual choice of transliterating the greek word choregos instead of translating the Chinese word. A choregos is a Greek person of great wealth and influence in charge of organizing a public play, appointed by the archon. Which perfectly sums up Furina's lore. Pretty good reason to theorize that Hoyo chose choregos, CN translated it to Chinese and EN translated it to Latin.

The quest title for Snezhnaya in the Teyvat chapter trailer is “Everwinter Without Mercy” so a snowy apocalypse seems right up their alley
