Advice / Question 💡 Feed time has become extremely stressful
Hi all, my baby is now 13 weeks old. At 11 weeks everything changed. He started crying during feeds, wanting to look around and not drink, getting extremely fussy. He’s formula was changed at 5 weeks old and he has been fine with it. He is on goat milk. I use Dr Brown anti colic bottles. I have changed the teat size recently to size 2. I also give him Infacol as he gets colic from time to time. Sometimes he is fine, other times it will take me around 1 hour to feed him. I also try space out his feed time just incase im feeding him to early but its always the same reaction. I know that he is hungry because he does end up finishing the feed. Im just curious if this is normal behaviour for some babies or if i should get him checked out. I have tried feeding in a dark room, light room, rocking him, shushing him. Nothing works!
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Could it be the temperature? My daughter is extremely picky and won’t drink a bottle unless it’s between 100-104°F. If it gets too cold during a feed, she’ll refuse to drink the rest of it and will just play with the nipple and look around until she gets fussy. We also use Dr Browns bottles but we use the wide neck ones. Sometimes the straws become airlocked with milk stuck in the straw and it’s harder for her to get milk out. The only thing that helps is taking it from her and holding it at an angle so the milk comes out of the straw

Maybe that level is too fast for the baby? Our baby is 5 months old and still uses the slower level for his bottles. When he started eating more we started using 8 ounces bottles but those come with faster flow nipples and he would do something similar like pull away and complain. We swapped them for the slower flow ones and he hasn’t had problems since.

If it helps, our 5mo eats like a tank and we only switched to a level 2 nipple maybe 2 weeks ago. He was taking a loooong time to finish bottles and now he's done in 10 minutes

we had loads of issues so we chatted with a lactation consultant. she put us onto enfamil AR (we had gas) and quark baby anti colic bottles (level 2 teat). both products are fantastic, I recommend them to everyone I know

Feed on demand and Pacefeed, don’t space out feeds for a newborn just go off their cues. The size 2 may be too fast which is why they’re refusing even if hungry. Colic isnt just from time to time it’s constant and prolonged bouts of crying lasting 3+ hours a day for 3 days or more a week for 3 weeks or longer. Never force or you risk an aversion. Just stop the feed and offer again later
