Quick Questions Thread

This thread (to be posted every four weeks) is a place for people to ask quick, common, or simple questions regarding Nihon Falcom and its games. The community is encouraged to ask here if your question is not opinion-based, such as where to find something in a game or when something occurred. Please mark all spoilers with the >!text!< format and remember to provide context.

If you post a new thread and your question is redundant (it has been posted on this subreddit recently), we will remove it. Additionally, we have made a Frequently Asked Questions wiki page for these. Please check there first before asking!

Joke question threads will be removed and joke answers should be kept to a minimum.

Please feel free to continue to post separate threads on this subreddit for content you expect to generate more interesting discussion, for example news, opinion-based discussion posts, and links.

Feel free to check out the subreddit wiki or the Discord server.

I checked the FAQ link, it looks severely out of date. I was looking for the most recent starting point for trails series and it cuts off at Kuro no Kiseki, which appears to be a 5 year old game with at least 2 following it.

Since the franchise has a single overarching storyline, you want to be playing everything in release order;

  • Trails in the Sky FC (or the remake)
  • Trails in the Sky SC (or the upcoming remake, releasing in September)
  • Trails in the Sky the 3rd (remake TBA, but inevitable)
  • Trails from Zero (remake TBA, but they've mentioned wanting to do it)
  • Trails to Azure (if they're remaking Zero, they're remaking Azure)
  • Trails of Cold Steel
  • Trails of Cold Steel II
  • Trails of Cold Steel III
  • Trails of Cold Steel IV
  • Trails into Reverie
  • Trails through Daybreak
  • Trails through Daybreak II
  • Trails beyond the Horizon

Skipping games is not recommended since you'll miss references, won't recognize recurring characters, and will get spoilers for whatever games you skipped. If you're going to skip stuff, at least make sure you start at the start of a story arc (FC, Zero, Cold Steel 1, or Daybreak 1) as you'll just be completely lost otherwise.

Adding the slight dissent that CS1 and CS2 can easily be played before any of the earlier games without any significant losses. This is what I did. You will miss some fanservice references but nothing important, and you then get the fun of going back to the earlier games and uncovering the context. This was more relevant before the Sky 1 remake gave you a modern-graphics starting point, though, which was previously the main reason for starting with Cold Steel.
