I know I may be in the minority here, but I just don't understand how, in good faith, you can re-hire the person responsible for the darkest period in this club's 150-years.

I get that people love Hird; he's a club legend. But he was the person in charge during the supplement saga, and we're still dealing with the repercussions from that period.

It just feels dirty to me, like we're sweeping everything under the rug.

How did Carey continue to work in the media after numerous assault charges/convictions? Why is Carey allowed to redeem himself with nothing more said about his indiscretions and not Hird? By any rational measure, Carey’s actions were more egregious than Hird’s. And if you want to talk about rug sweeping, why no WorkSafe investigation into the allegations that twelve other clubs were running supplement programs themselves around the same time? We were not Robinson Crusoe in that regard.

Lol. Yeah, nah. Pretty sure that my basic points were a) No one should be considered to be beyond redemption or denied the chance to attain it, b) That there was a level of selective crucifixion applied by the AFL, Media, footy fans in general when it is apparent that “black ops” were endemic across the league. Agree or disagree. It makes not one iota of difference to my own personal convictions.

Hird has a nice cushy media job now. He's had enough redemption in that regard to be set for life. He can stay the fuck away from this football club though. We can accept that what's happened is now history, whilst keeping him at a stern arm's length and not inviting the chaos and circus that would ensue back in the door should he be re-appointed

Yeah, look. I think we all have some feelings of trepidation and misgiving around his potential appointment. No argument there. I suspect that one of the key factors to be considered is the possibility, and others have articulated this also, that the narrative of the disgraced favourite son returning to lead his people from the wilderness, right the wrongs of the past and achieve both personal and collective redemption is now or will eventually be, irresistible. And because of this momentum, perhaps the board will go with it. It’s a compelling fantasy, and I’m sure we can all see the flaws inherent in it, yet there is some allure to it also.

Precedent really only applies to cases that are identical in nature. In that regard, calling on a different legal controversy to argue against discussing another legal controversy is fallacious. James Hird was in charge of the team for the worst period in the club's history. He largely mismanaged both the off-field proceedings as well as the players on-field. The last thing Essendon needs is to bring this guy back into the mix, particularly as the club is already struggling enough as it is. Point blank, end of story. If he really wants to coach, he can go to the fucking Blues for all I care. At the very least, it would be amusing to watch for me

What Kool-aid champ? By your reference, I assume you are seriously equating my consideration of support of a specific coaching aspirant to the role of senior coach in a minor or support played in one country with active participation in a tragic death ritual promoted by a cult leader that resulted in the deaths of close to 1000 people? Really?

TIL the phrase "drinking the Kool-Aid", although associated with the Jonestown murder-suicides, actually originated in the Tom Wolfe book "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" about Ken Kesey and the "Merry Pranksters". Jonestown actually used Flavor Aid. : r/todayilearned

The more you know mate. It's from a book.

By drinking the Kool-Aid. In case it was too hard to ascertain.

I was referring to the constant thinking that an "Essendon" person is required to "save" the club. No other team has this kind of obsession with hiring in house like it's some kind of panacea.

Look mate, I am familiar with both of the references and I’m pretty sure I know in which sense you meant the phrase. Claiming that drinking Kool aid at Jonestown and Kool aid with the Merry Pranksters have equivalent meanings is absurd, and “keep drinking the Kool aid” in the sense you used it is only applicable to the first scenario before becoming nonsensical. Maybe you should look into it all a little Furthur. ;)

Be well.

Nah you don't know what I meant.

Just an insecure boomer who can't stand being wrong.

Enjoy another decade of no finals under Hird.

If you can’t articulate and specify the actual meaning behind your little jibe, and engage in debate on a semantic level, maybe just shut your mouth, eh?

u/Lost-Competition8482 6d ago

I explained the jibe clearly. Kool-Aid=thinking Essendon people will magically fix it.

Not my fault all the lead fuel your generation huffed destroyed your ability to read.

Go have another beer old man. It'll numb the pain of *check notes* 7934 days.

Your jibe is shit because you actually don’t understand what you’re saying. Sadly, you just plainly lack the capacity to articulate your position in any meaningful way, or engage in respectful argument or debate with a soundness to your logic. Yes, I’ll enjoy my beer and being old. You enjoy talking shit and then having to google the meaning of the phrases after you’ve used them.

Anyway, I’ll just say best of luck and that I wish you the best, because life is short and anger is a destructive emotion to sit with for too long.

Go Dons.
