Positives from today’s Cleveland baseball:

Today we hope for IssaBibe to not give up 5 home runs. Tanner Bibee🅱️ ends his day with a final line of 6IP, 6H, 3R, 1BB, and 5K on 90 pitches (62 strikes). Do my eyes deceive me, or is that a quality start??? Wish I could just @ the entire DFA crowd lol, he ain’t goin anywhere folks.

Can’t tell if we need to summon Jobu or tell him to fuck off. The bats get 4 runs off of 11 hits, 2 walks, and a 🥔 HBP. A doubles parade today, with Fry🍟, Rhys⚡️, Roc🪨, and José🐐 each having one. Fry added 2 singles and a walk, Rhys a walk, and Roc a single. CDL🚚 had a trio of singles and Hedgey🦔 a pair of RBI from a single. Also, noting that Cooper Ingle📐 started in LF today for Columbus. Curious.

Bullpen arms, ya got a day off tomorrow, go nuts. Holderman🤝(0.1IP, 2R), Herrin🐟(0.1IP, 3R), Heuer🚁(0.1IP, 1R), and Dion🦺(2IP) combine to go 3IP, 6H, 6R, 3BB, and 4K. When I said go nuts I meant strike everyone out, not give up 6 runs. Come back soon Erik. Dion success!!!

(Yesterday) There we go RubberDucks! DeLucia🤌 has his second straight quality start, going 6IP, 4H, 1R(0ER), 1BB, and 5K on 84(56) pitches. Lampe🕯️led the bats, going 3/4 with a double, triple, and 2 RBI, while Rosario🥀 had a pair of doubles, and Mooney🌙 had a double and 3 RBI, as Akron wins 10-3!

Ohhh that is interesting about Ingle. Seems like they are trying to find a place for him that would allow them to bring him up?

8

u/JoseRamirezGOAT 18h ago

That's exciting. They got Bailey so they don't need him catching, but he's just too hot to not at least give him some run at DH or something after the service manipulation date passes.

7

u/joeywahoo92 17h ago

Velasquez has been playing in LF more as well

4

u/canttakethshyfrom_me 17h ago

Thank goodness on Ingle. Can't keep wasting that offensive production with the Guardians offense on life support. He put in playing time in both outfield corner spots while at Clemson.

And being up in Cleveland, he'll have FOUR all-star catchers to learn from.

1

u/klein_four_group 36 17h ago

Just bring Ingle up to DH if not catch. Or give Cody Huff a shot at 1B. Manzardo needs a stint at Columbus, maybe that can fix him like it did Rocchio. The homerun in Philly was cool but he's rocking a 34% K rate with 17 RBIs, and I cannot watch him hacking with zero approach with RISP anymore.

3

u/anonreasons 16h ago

I don't even like manzardo long term but he has an .858 OPS this month lol he is not being sent to Columbus.

1

u/canttakethshyfrom_me 17h ago

He looked like was putting it together, and then the whole offense collapsed.

2

u/taynich 17h ago

Maybe he will act as a replacement for Fry in the future? Although we need more RH bats

2

u/canttakethshyfrom_me 17h ago

Oh definitely need more RH bats. But they're damn hard to find, especially for a team that won't spend a dime.

And Ingle definitely has the potential to be an acceptable full-time catcher. Though not a defensive phenom, he doesn't have the arm for it.

I'd be happy with him as a high OBP first baseman with moderate pop, TBH. More than that would be gravy.

1

u/No_Contribution_7635 17h ago

Ingle hype! Starving for hitters, try em all.

Vogt has to get it together. For a players’ guy, I’ve never seen him truly run out and defend one of his players. He should have been flying out of the dugout on the Herrin walk. Get fired up and get yourself ejected, dude! More importantly, 12 of our 14 batters are below-average in challenges, and worse, they often challenge at completely inconsequential times. Baseball is a game that rewards statistically sound decision-making in the long run, and Vogt is letting these guys selfishly challenge whenever they want completely on instinct. We’ve lost multiple games this year because he refuses to institute some basic rules on when to challenge.

And guess what. The White Sox are now a game back and about to play the Twins and we’re about to play the Yankees.

Anyway:

Record: 34-27

Place: 1st

Division lead: 1.0

Games to play: 101

Playoffs magic number: 98

Current pace: 90-72

u/Dapper_Caregiver2859 👑 King Kwan 🦍 17h ago

We’re not gonna get very far without: 1. A healthy Sabrowski (with command) 2. José being José 3. A power hitter in the middle of the lineup (so far, Manzo and Hoskins aren’t doing it) 4. An understanding of basic probability / leverage opportunities for challenges. (To be fair, Stu challenged at a good time by this standard, but the earlier challenge was not).

-1

u/Deadleggg ⚾small ball baseball terrorists⚾ 17h ago

We weren't going very far to begin with. Just making the playoffs should exceed expectations.

8

u/canttakethshyfrom_me 18h ago

He's hands-off to the point of irresponsibility. He's got to yank the leash.

23

u/MagyarAccountant 🏠🏃‍♂️🍑 18h ago

For someone who lives and dies by the statistics of platoon advantage, you'd think he'd be learning and preaching the statistics of when /when not to ABS challenge.

Overall his in game management has shown little/no improvement in 3 years and we've been winning mostly in spite of it imo

23

u/klein_four_group 36 17h ago edited 17h ago

Overall his in game management has shown little/no improvement in 3 years and we've been winning mostly in spite of it imo

This is the most concerning thing. Zero situational awareness or feel for the game. You can't even call his strategy "analytics", because analytics would tell you Herrin is not a high-leverage guy.

People talk about how in-game strategy is learnable whereas Vogt's feel for the clubhouse is not. That might be true but he has not improved at all. In fact he makes the same moves that backfire over and over.

9

u/420DonCheadle420 17h ago

I don’t even think he believes in the analytics of the platoon as much as he finds it to be the easiest way to make good on his promise that everybody plays. If he actually believed in analytics he wouldn’t manage the way he does lol

5

u/moonheron in Chernoff we Trust 17h ago

He lowkey manages a lot like Tito did

3

u/iagreegoguard_s Pride G 16h ago

The similarities make me question if it isnt really the FO putting a lot of pressure on the decisions. I think there have been some statements to the contrary, but Im skeptical

6

u/MagyarAccountant 🏠🏃‍♂️🍑 16h ago

Not to mention the brutally obvious moves that shouldn't even need to be "learned" like walking Stanton with a base open in the ALCS

1

u/girlywish 12h ago

There has to be analytics people in the org who can help set ground rules for challenges. That shouldn't really be on Vogt.

15

u/klein_four_group 36 18h ago

I'm not a Vogt fan, I think a team so low on resources like ours needs a strategically savvy manager who can get the most out of the roster. Having said that, getting thrown out is clearly not his personality, he's not Aaron Boone, and it would be counterproductive to pretend to be someone he's not. If there's one thing most employees do not tolerate, it's having an inauthentic manager.

8

u/believelander19 Flying G 17h ago

This is one of the more level headed takes.

That being said, we have seen him bark at umps before plenty. Maybe don't go get tossed right away on purpose but at least go get in the guys face. Crippling missed call. And Vogt was a catcher to boot.

3

u/Bourbonball442 Diamond C 16h ago

I totally agree on your “run out there, get fired up and get ejected” take re: the Herrin walk!! Hedges and Bailey should be the only ones making ABS challenges. And save them for mid to late in games.

68

u/Both-Consideration56 18h ago

We can blame the bad calls all we want.

The reality is that they failed to consistently score with runners on base. Period.

Luckily, the sky is not falling. They are still in first and it is not even June.

13

u/believelander19 Flying G 17h ago

Honestly it's way more fun to struggle early in the year and rally later in the year than be one of the hottest teams in baseball and collapse after the ASB like we've seen before

Lay all the skeletons and weaknesses out now, figure out which prospects can contribute meaningful innings/games, maybe make a move or two near the deadline.

Our F.O. and farm system has shown an ability to keep this franchise in the postseason conversation just about every season for the past 15+ years.... despite shopping on Facebook marketplace while the 3 franchises with better W-L records in that span go straight to the Ferrari dealership 😂

Guards ball. 162 is a lot of baseball.

They should go play laser tag or something tomorrow and get ready to maybe surprise some people on Tuesday.

Go Guards.

22

u/Any_Salamander9958 18h ago

Kwan might be bad this year but his value as a net positive to the team was shown this weekend.

13

u/klein_four_group 36 17h ago

Yeah the team is not ready for the post-Kwan era yet.

1

u/the_main_entrance 13h ago

I agree but don’t think losing a handful of games proves it.

18

u/klein_four_group 36 18h ago

A lot of blame to go around today.

Jose for burning a challenge in a completely unnecessary situation, probably out of frustration.

Vogt for submitting to handedness once again as the be all end all (Fairchild and Herrin). Then for punting the game at 4-6.

Holderman and Herrin for the walks.

And OMG Manzardo for not having any situational awareness. Bases loaded one out he needed to find a contact mode.

Now we get to see Cantillo and Cecconi pitch in Yankee Stadium.

28

u/bulletpharm 18h ago

DFA Fairchild is not harsh enough.

Send him to Detroit. Be cruel.

2

u/Cupcake_and_Candybar 17h ago

Thanks for everything (the anecdote about pinch running for Vogt) Fairchild, but it’s time to say goodbye

1

u/canttakethshyfrom_me 2h ago

He wouldn't be here at all if he wasn't personal friends with Vogt. I am bothered.

5

u/believelander19 Flying G 17h ago

Honestly I'm just sad for Tanner Bibee and Austin Hedges right now.

Hog with a rare 2 RBI day and caught and called a great game but had his extra weapon taken out of his pocket by horrific hitter challenges.

Bibee threw a great game and should have gotten the W but the bullpen, ump, and lack of judicious challenge use by the hitters cost him.

Just unreal.

16

u/Yesalmsot Flying G 18h ago

One bad call can change a game

10

u/believelander19 Flying G 17h ago

Honestly just go full robot at this point. Let the human umps still call it if it makes people feel better but c'mon, it's getting ridiculous.

Sort of like NBA rules eliminating ref initiated reviews in the last 2 minutes and if teams are out of challenges then TOO BAD.

Half measures are more frustrating tbh.

11

u/SylemNova Selby Truther 18h ago

Need to find a lefty reliever out there somewhere

Am super curious what we're gonna do for summer trade moves.

I take a look down in Columbus and their lineup card today is loaded with guys who could be MLB players today for different organizations. Maybe not the pieces we need rn, but some ammunition perhaps.

This American League is weak. We need to get better, need our core to play better, need VOGT to be better, and give ourselves a shot to be one of like 4 teams with a chance to win the AL

Cuz lately, we haven't looked good enough. Haven't played well enough. Been lucky to scrape out some wins.

But we absolutely must be active in getting this right. Our division stinks. It's us and a White Sox team running on all the house money.

Today was miserable. This Yankees series may also be miserable.

Idk. We'll see what happens.

3

u/Constant_Term6133 17h ago

It’s going to be hard to find a LH RP this time of year. If he’s worth anything, they’d have to overpay and that doesn’t fit their mold.

5

u/420DonCheadle420 17h ago

Yeahhhh I think we could be in for some pain. Gonna be important to keep a level head because the L10 is pretty likely to get ugly here.

Nothing that happened in the last week, or will happen in the next week, is going to make or break our season. That’s what we’ll have to remind ourselves lol

2

u/Scatheli 17h ago

I’d definitely like to see them package a few prospects for a bullpen arm or two. Plus, move Aleman up and let him take any lumps in Cleveland, not Columbus.

4

u/Deadleggg ⚾small ball baseball terrorists⚾ 17h ago

You said it. Running on house money and the Dolans won't do anything else until this team is sold.

They have at most a few years before offloading the asset. You think they would risk precious pennies to try and win instead of scraping as much value as possible?

ROI is more important to them than winning anything.

1

u/No_Contribution_7635 59m ago

Fry may have proven himself enough that Huff is trade material and Coop is team material.

Fry's just doing good, no two ways about it. Need stability wherever we can find it.

10

u/fancypantsman23 18h ago

I have #seenenough of Stuart Fairchild!!

5

u/diamondbijou 18h ago

Was watching the game with some friends. Did they play No Surrender by Bone Thugs? That was cool lol

1

u/ClumbsyVulture 3h ago

You did. They do play Bone once in a while. Them being from Cleveland and all

4

u/jatjat1978_ 18h ago

Wish I had something positive to say about today's game but I don't. Well I guess we found that Fairchild is double a contender not mlb material

1

u/No_Contribution_7635 1h ago

After Akron lost Ralphy they've been tanking. They could really use Fairchild, no snark.

4

I legit don't know what he has to do at this point. I think we need to call Etsy witches to cure him.

3

u/Sparty013 BLEACHer Creature 17h ago

I don’t know what the fix is, but this teams mind numbing incompetency at challenging is now becoming a serious issue. That inning never happens if we had a challenge available.

1

u/canttakethshyfrom_me 2h ago

"Make new mistakes every day" bearing fruit in the most predictable way. This whole "I'm your friend, not your boss" management style ain't it.

3

u/Available-Parfait553 17h ago

Herrin can’t be put in high leverage situations. He was the difference today.

3

u/Henry_Pussycat 14h ago

Manzardo whiffing with bases juiced, one out was huge

1

u/No_Contribution_7635 3h ago

Manzo needs time with the Clipps, he needs to be comfortable in a lineup and not just a pinch hitter. Rhys keeps getting better and defense wise isn't any better or worse, both are slow as Sloths.

7

u/No_Contribution_7635 18h ago edited 1h ago

Yeah.....My B. Fairchild is more Brito than Bazz. Well now we know.

DFA Fairchild to open the 40 to bring up Ralphy/or Cooper and then option Manzardo to the Clippers. Sounds like progress if addressing offense is the goal.

Keep up the great work Halpin.

Still no sweep!

13

u/klein_four_group 36 17h ago

Fairchild makes Brito look like Bazzana, heck he makes Halpin look like CDL.

3

u/No_Contribution_7635 17h ago

If this was Halpin's last chance at the majors than I say he grabbed that opportunity by the horns. Honorable mention to Fry too.

Tim Herrin, buddy.....

2

u/Scatheli 18h ago

Let’s call some of our relievers up. I’d way rather seen Aleman up here and working through any growing pains.

2

u/StrategyThink4687 17h ago

Seems like every year there’s a 30 day stretch even 60 days where Jose carries the team. Still waiting, tough to see this team being any good without that.

2

u/Kellygoosecock169 3h ago

Interested in the left on base stats compared to other teams

2

u/Ok_Crazy479 17h ago

Thank goodness Kwan is coming back! That Fairchild due is AWFUL! Did he even foul off a ball during his strikeouts? And worst yet he had a useless, selfish challenge we could've used on that Herrin walk

1

u/Scatheli 18h ago

How long is Kwan expected to be away, do we have any idea?

4

This one wasn’t in Bibee although he hasn’t been good enough to win either. The bullpen the last two days has been abysmal. What are the odds they hit again the Yankees three starters. Cantillo against Judge with that short right field fence? I don’t have good feelings.

Fairfield back to AA. Hitters arent allowed to challenge unless theres 2 left in 8th. Get a new hitting coach. Im over it.

I know it seems like weve had a tough schedule to start the year but in reality we're 20th is strength of schedule. Getting swept by Yanks will cement us as properly mid.

Im not saying season over we suck yada yada but with average hitting stats we're easily the best team in the league. Add 10 wins easy. Average bats. Thats all.

And this is not like its a new issue. We've all known it for years. Relying on rookie pizazz and recycled veterans to hit on their own clearly isnt cutting it. But our roster has all the potential. I dont want to replace anyone. I dont think we need to. The vets have done it before and the rookies have insane raw talent. Its coaching. Through and through. Hitting coaching is absolute dog shit and needs fixed if they want to win.

That is a terrible take. They had no business coming back to win the division last season and frankly shouldn’t be sitting in the #2 seed in the AL right now with this roster. It’s 162 game season and Vogt manages it that way. You’re not going to to go to your best available player every time. Rest and recuperation is real in this game.

Well, the people that cover the game for a living must think he’s good because they voted him manager of the year twice. It’s fair to say they are more qualified to know a good manager than any of us randos on Reddit.

1

u/thegermblaster 44 17h ago

Two things can also be true: Vogt is a good manager who is not - currently - doing a good job.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that he’s cost us some games with his bullpen, lineup, platoon decision making.

Now granted, he has to work within the roster provided to him and he’s not a miracle worker but he’s made a lot of decisions fans scratch their heads at and, low and behold, the decision fails miserably.

Any pitching complaints can go "softly" to Tim. Offense, Offense, Offense: needs drastic course corrections. Fry is too consistent to be platooned, Manzardo has plateued and is regressing across the board to favoring Hoskins, Ramirez and CDL are hit or BIG miss....And we got two big hitting prospects waiting for their turn.

Halpin proving he's locked down his 40 spot even if he's sent down when Kwan comes back.

The Rubber Ducks would appreciate a hitter like Fairchild....Before New York. Sucks but AAA .296 didn't translate to the Majors.
