Discussion Do you think the other realms should have physical crowns too?

I was watching some parts of the State Opening of Parliament in the UK yesterday and it was pretty different compared to the Canadian one last year. While Canada has maintained the robes and regalia of the Black Rod, Speaker, etc., the King wore just a suit.

I believe that Justin Trudeau creating the Canadian heraldic crown was a step in the positive direction, as it helps to Canadianize the monarchy instead of us distancing ourselves from it, but wouldn't it be better if it was made in a physical form as well?

It could be worn by the Sovereign for the Opening of Parliament, or placed on a cushion and carried by the President of the Privy Council before the Governor General when they open Parliament in the Sovereign's absence, kind of like when Parliament is opened by the Counsellors of State in the UK.

Yes.

The hard part is designing it.

TBF it has been done in (relatively) recent times with the crown of the Prince of Wales made for Charlie himself.

I honestly don't think a crown would be that expensive, especially if you don't need to put diamonds in it.

We can slash the GG's paycheque in exchange for the one-time payment for a crown.

G'day GG, you're going to miss out on your pay for the next few years so we can give this rich man over here another exxy hat. Hope that's okay with you. Love, Mr Prime Minister.

The crown isn’t really for him though, it’s not like he sits around watching tv with that heavy ass crown of St.Edward on his head. He just wears it at events and I expect finds it difficult to do so. The rest of the time it’s for display and tourists.

It's not really about who gets it, it's about cutting the governor general's pay for it. Either the crown is worth it, in which case it should be paid for by the state, or it is not worth it, in which case it shouldn't be paid for at all. But there's no situation in which the state should make the governor general pay for it. In the particular case of Canada, I could see a case under present geopolitical circumstances for a physical crown in Ottawa for the king's use when he visits or to represent his authority by the governor general in parliament. (I'm not sure exactly how I would feel about it - but it's not prima facie absurd, which is how I would have felt three years ago.)

It's the optics, people mostly don't care for the details they'll read a headline or watch a short video and make up their mind on the spot

Yes. I wouldn’t have minded the Canadian crown redesign, if it actually was a physical crown that we were replacing the old one with.

Having each dominion have its own crown makes the monarchy more unique and specific to each, which would help bring it away from being considered ‘British’ only.

If Canzuk formed as a state as well, a specific Canzuk crown should also be formed, to be the ‘unifying’ crown alongside the local crowns.

That was my problem with it, it was a paper crown.

The Hon. Margaret McCain has a unique cornet on her heraldic achievement. It would be fun to think about how HM the King of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia etc. would all have their own crown.

There are probably enough historical crowns floating around that could be used or used as designs. Find some association with whichever dominion

A can of motor oil on a cushion, since our resources are why everyone covets us.

The Australian one should be made of gold paper to signify the ephemeral nature of the Australian Crown.

Maybe the prime minister and leader of the opposition can pull a big Christmas cracker and whoever gets the paper crown gets to carefully unfold it and arrange it on the kings head.

Tbf i dont see the hardship in just putting his clobber in a suitcase or smth and taking it over on the same plane.

Hm shouldn't be just the king of Britain, rather all commonwealth nations that have him as ths sovereign and he just happens to live in the UK.
