What do you need from local news?

Hi there, I'm Alex Rochester, KUOW's Digital Community Engagement Producer. My job is to talk with the KUOW audience and Puget Sound region residents about their local news needs.

Our midday broadcast show and podcast Soundside is a newsmagazine radio show that keeps you up to date on local issues and then dives deep to build understanding. The team are currently asking listeners and non-listeners for their hopes, dreams and constructive critiques of the show. Anyone who cares about local news is welcome to participate!

Please fill in this survey or share your answers to the following questions in the comments.

If you're a listener, what do you want more or less of in the show?

If you're not a listener, what would it have to feature to feel worth your time?

Do you want more stories that focus on politics, community-solutions, outside of Seattle, arts & culture, and/or panel discussions with multiple perspectives? Do you want less of something?

The team asked for listeners to weigh in because they take feedback very seriously, so the more detailed your thoughts the more it will help them understand how best to serve the public with the news they need.

You seem to avoid bread and butter issues on our side of the Sound. Nothing about the many long closed and empty shops, our lack of medical care, the many problems with the CHI System, the issues with the Shipyard, etc.

Well it is primarily a seattle news based radio show. Something crazy has to happen in Bremerton before they cover any of our issues

That said, your 100% right. I wish their was more stories about how fucked medical care is over here and the constant fake "we're so sorry" from the shipyard when their contractors dump tens of thousands of gallons of pollutants into the inlet every year

That's my point. They claim to cover the Sound. Bremerton exists in coverage only when something awful happens. Listen to online KLAM for Bremerton coverage. We don't have local radio or TV stations.

The survey wouldn’t work on mobile.

Cover how the Washington state ferries system hates Bremerton. How shitty traffic is through Gorst, which by the way will be closed for 2 weeks. Also cover how shitty trump is, whether it’s his slush fund, ufc fight on the lawn, our reflecting pool, raping people, farm bill, Iran, oh and almost forgot how he is a pedo.

Hard agree with your first points, but have to point out that NRP and KUOW do already  cover Trump’s shittiness!

How do you think news is created? It requires people working jobs that they're paid for. The money to pay them has to come from somewhere.

KUOW doesn’t have paywalls! Are you thinking of Kitsap Sun? They have an aggressive paywall while having gotten rid of most of their reporters and have tons of advertorials so there is a point there about not paying them, but in general journalism is vital and worth supporting!

Sound side is very Seattle focused which has nothing to do with us over here

We’re interdependent in a way. We share a waterway. Bremertonians are part of Seattle’s workforce. We go to Seattle for medical and sports. We are patrons of shops, bars, and restaurants. We’re both firmly Democrat. Culturally and politically we’re similar.

I know there are a lot of people who live in Kitsap and work in Seattle. I don't know anyone who does that. Culturally we seem a lot different than Seattle. Bremerton is more blue collar with the shipyard being the biggest employer. Bremerton consistently votes Democrat, but is far closer to purple than Seattles deep blue. The waterway that separates us feels vast even if it is only about 10 miles.

The biggest difference between Bremerton and Seattle is that everyone I know here kinda hates Seattle and wouldn't like being called similar.

I lived in Seattle for many years and now live here. I don’t see a big difference personally. Bremerton is more blue collar for sure, like parts of Seattle and like old Ballard was. I’m just not feeling a huge divide in culture myself. I love both cities. Maybe over here people aren’t as segregated by white collar versus blue? Edit: adding that Bremerton demographics could also be shifting as more people move here from Seattle.

Local fraud would be great. For example, there is a case where a man and his wife defrauded a disabled woman and ruined her life. Just before that they committed business identity theft stealing millions through wheelchair fraud.

I took the survey, but just wanted to chime in here to say that KUOW does excellent reporting. I have also contacted you via the website form on a story that I felt like was lacking perspective and got a thoughtful reply very quickly, so I wanted to let people know that it’s true that they do take feedback seriously.

I was unable to complete the survey on mobile. No way to submit my answers

Oh no, I'm so sorry about that! I think it's something to do with it being an embedded Microsoft Form on a webpage, you might have better luck directly filling it in here, Soundside Feedback – Fill out form
