Rhode Island Liz is completely out of touch; Homelessness in America.
The majority of homeless people in the US fall into the category of “invisible homelessness,” the McKinney-Vento Act defines homelessness in many ways, including lesser known ways such as unsafe living conditions, non-habitable domiciles (cars, etc), non permanent (shelters, hotel/motel rooms) and DOUBLED-UP homes. This is all in addition to visible homeless conditions that Liz seems to think is the only way someone can be homeless.
Doubled up generally means two or more families living in a single family home, with one family having no right or stake in the home. This is what Alicia experienced. It is in fact federally recognized in many circumstances. It also can have very real psychological and socioeconomic effects on someone who had a stable home that was suddenly taken away. Homelessness can also fall into the two categories of acute vs. chronic. Alicia appears to have experienced acute homelessness. Still a very real experience.
That Liz thinks someone has to be literally on the street, in a sleeping bag, on skid row… to be homeless is so out of touch and reflects on her the opposite of the point she is so hell bent on trying to prove.
Did Alicia’s extended family have the resources to help her and her mom during that time? Sure. But it doesn’t change the fact that their home was taken away and had they not had family members with enough room to house them, they very likely could’ve crossed over into the “visible” side of homelessness.
Rant over.
