I know that hiring a good illustrator/designer is an expense that everyone can't afford for these projects, but seeing the skill and creativity in these designs held up next to some of the stuff people come up with using do-it-yourself style software really highlights how much impact a good cover can have on your impression of a book.

OP these are amazing. I hope folks here see the value in what you do and hire you for what you deserve.

For others thinking about cobbling together your own covers, please consider what a professional can pull off.

Do you need to read the books to get a feel for how the cover should look, or do you base it on what the author tells you?

Sometimes I read the whole book (but that is relatively rare). Usually it's based off excerpts, chapters, or just a description of the book from the author with design inspirations and themes of the book. Sometimes their own ideas to work from.

It's still going to be quite a while before I'm ready for a designer, but your work is by far my favorite! Went to immediately save the post based on the first cover only to realize when I got to Hornet's Nest that I've seen your posts before, already have your site bookmarked, and keep naturally finding myself drawn to your style. Definitely speaks to how memorable and marketable your art is.
