I guess it depends on your starting position. I recently did my first 10k. I haven't done any strength training for it but then I've been working out in the gym for decades. My sisters complain their knees hurt after running and I'm sure that's because they need to do some strength training.
On the whole though, I think strength training is a good idea and while I didn't need any to get me through my 10k, I have identified some areas I think I'm benefit from extra work so I'll be doing a bit more when the heat passes and I'm back in the gym.
